Brown Students?

So I have a question for all the Brown students…

When I visited Brown, all I saw were normal people (and generally happy people). Yet when I returned home I was bombarded with the stories of Brown students being only rich kids, pot smokers, hippies, and average students whose parents paid to get them in. While I don’t believe any of this I am wondering where do all these claims surface from? Is there a small population that reflects these stereotypes at Brown?

Small population, people who are outside of Brown poorly generalizing, though there are lots of pot smokers here (but I dont think that much more than omst places). Also, in the mid 90s certain, "allstar" kids were let in, particularly, it was a popular spot for celebrity children. I don't know how unqualified they were, but who they were did affect their decisions, from my understanding.

I heard similar things quiet a few times, maybe someone can tell me if this is true: That Brown is where all the rich, smart kids go to slack off for four years becaue its Ivy League and they have a job waiting for them after graduation. I have to say, the P/F, no requirements did kind of suggest that slacking would be possible at Brown, but I'm sure that the majority of kids are not like this. Also, someone on CC said that they don't like premeds because all they do is study, is this just one person's view or prevalent on campus?

That's a load of ****, eventer.

Though, there are those of us who don't like premeds. I do have an issue with people who are not interested in learning and are only concerned with grades, whether that reflects what they've learned or not. I also have an issue with people who are at Brown taking classes simply to get requirements out of the way. Unfortunately, there is a segment of premeds like this-- not all, but some, and that segment bother the hell out of me.

People should come to Brown to take advantage of the New Curriculum, which is not to just randomly take what you want, but rather, to explore to your intellectual content what's out there without fear and without motivation other than the academic.

Well while I was at Brown I met a senior PLME student and 2 seniors who are conducting physical chemistry research and for people who spend loads of time in the lab and studying, they seemed very happy. One thing I noticed was that they were all very well adjusted/well-rounded despite the fact that they were "science-geeks" which I think really shows that the Brown environment is conducive to a balance between academics and a social/extracurricular life. So I think if they were hated or treated as social pariahs because they spend a lot of time studying they would not have went on and on about how it is going to be impossible to leave Brown in a month.

I can't imagine that at Brown, or any top university, studying would be looked down upon and I think the premed hatred fits into the rich kids, dope-addicted, etc., etc. stereotype.

Studying isn't looked down upon at all, but you will have less friends if that's all you're doing.

Listen, I only go out 2 nights a week, people do a whole range of never going out and always studying and never studying and always going out. Be as social as you want, be not as social as you want. This place is accepting if nothing else.
