Hi,

I have heard of Brown but I don’t actually know anyone going here. What are the students like at Brown (I’d assume ‘smart’ for one) ?

A friend of mine who spent an overnight says that some kids are pretencious, but every student can hold an intelligent conversation.

Pretentious* Sorry that really irked me, especially when there is an automatic spell check…

Not to sound like a jerk, but you’ll probably get more responses to this question using the search function. The topic of atmosphere and the like at Brown is common here and we’ve had some great discussions in the past.

overall it’s a liberal hipster kind of place, but there’s also a jock / preppy scene, if you want to generalize. everyone is very friendly, very smart, very passionate. dorky cool people is i think the best way to sum it up. great place to be.

my one beef is that we are sheltered and take ourselves and our “problems” too seriously

^^I completely agree with this statement! Especially the part about us taking “our ‘problems’ too seriously.” I think passionate and intellegent are very fair generalizations.

I didn’t even know what a hipster was until I came here, haha. (But oh, yeah, Thayer Street has a few thrift stores and an Urban Outfitters… that probably says enough.) People have all these random hidden talents, are generally very friendly. The are for the most part quite intelligent. I agree that many of the kids here are a bit sheltered and idealistic liberals. A majority come from upper-middle class families, though there are some students whose families are extremely, extremely wealthy and on the flip side, students who come from poorer financial backgrounds. Practically half of the incoming freshman class starts out as premed or so it seems, and the numbers dwindle down as time passes.

My neighbor and friend who goes to Brown told me that Brown students are among the happiest and most creative people he’s ever met, if that helps.

um, melody, you DO sound like a jerk when you keep saying “check the search function”. chill out. let people do their thing. you don’t seem to be able to let people experience this forum on their own. it’s not all about you. go sort some socks or something.

Think of it this way: we’ve got a little of everything. I’ve met the friendliest people and just a few snobbish people. Then there’s everyone in between: geeky, funny, preppy, shy, unique, etc.
