Brown Summer Program

Im doing the mini course summer program at brown in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone else has done it, if they would tell me about it. Was there anything you wish you should’ve brought? Is there a lot of homework? I’d appreciate any advice or a feel of how its going to be.

Thanks

Look under the SUmmer Program tab [http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=201458][/url] - there is a thread on this with some good info. Enjoy!

My son spent 2 summers @ Brown (taking 3 week courses). He REALLY enjoyed being away (esp at 15 and without curfews - Brown tightened the rules the following yr). Great experience testing out a college environment - facilities, professors, location, etc. Make the most of your time there. Take trips to Boston, Newport, Cape Cod. Amt of homework depends on the class you're taking. I think one of his science classes required a research paper/presentation at the end. Not sure about the other. I know he was in class morn and aft - it was a lab course. I don't think most classes are that long - but some require a good deal of reading. Sorry I don't know more but we RARELY heard from him. He was out having too much fun.

Your teacher will write an evaluation of your work at the end of the class - I think you get a grade also. My son forgot about his rec letters when he applied to colleges (and most schools only would accept one or two letters). But a month or so after applying (and he was deferred from Yale), he sent in one of his Brown letters to his top choices. I think the letter helped coz it said he was a top student in the class, even though he was the youngest, etc. The letter described HOW he worked in the classroom with specific examples. I suspect it was more informative than his HS rec letters. Not sure if it made the difference but he was accepted to Brown, Yale, Duke, etc. When applying to Brown he could easily answer WHY Brown? He knew specific reasons.
