hi i’m interested in the summer@brown programs. i’ve heard generally positive things from a few friends, but nothing too specific. what are your experiences at summer@brown?

also, does anyone know about that whole scholar-athlete program, and if it’s worth doing? (for fencing)

1) “Brown” during the Summer. It’s nothing like Brown during the school year. Nothing. Because it’s run by completely different people who don’t do anything at Brown during the school year and who don’t understand its philosophy at all. The only thing Brown-like will be the resident advisers, and they will be held back and controlled by their bosses. (Summer @ Brown RA’s rarely get along with their supervisors.)
2) To interact with a bunch of possible future classmates. Some people will get in. I’ve met ppl at Brown who did Summer@Brown. But only a small handful get in—and those who don’t were often predictably not going to.
3) A leg up in admissions. Brown admissions will smile favorably on the fact that you did a summer program at all instead of sitting on your bum, but not because it’s theirs.
4) Classes that are the same caliber as school-year ones. Because summer is summer. 'Nuff said.

What to expect:
A pretty good academic experience, nonetheless.
Useful R.A.'s if you find the ones who care, we’re a fountain of information regarding not just Brown, but college and college admissions in general.
Lots of things to do. They schedule as much as they can to try to keep you guys out of trouble. You won’t be bored.
A lot of really rich kids. Not all are flashy or completely insensitive…but some can be.
A generally good time.
A trial run at managing your time the college-way.
Possibly friends that will last. I’ve met a decent # of people who are still very much in touch with people they met that summer. And I’ve watched on facebook–my former kids are still in touch.

thanks for the info … go to know
are the college workshops useful? also is there a lot of free time? and how much work is involved in a science course? is there access to fitness facilities?

hey i did the summer@brown program last year and i HIGHLY recommend it.
a. the college workshops can be helpful but they are what you make out of them
b. you basically have as much free time as you want. you can choose to study and work & go to all the programs & you will still have time to do stuff. yet you truly are NEVER bored.
c. my friends & i worked out at two different fitness facilities while we were there.

I loved my two summr@Brown experiences, but I’m not a current student so I can’t discredit justbreathe’s information. I have met friends that I keep in contact wth, and my RA was awesome. I did hear that doing a Brown camp shows interest in the school and this was considered a good thing, but I might be wrong.

The workload is not bad at all, acces to fitness facilities (just have to be willing to walk a few blocks), and you have a good deal of free time. I cannot say anything about the scholar-athlete thing because I know nothing about it. Hope that this helps! :)

pray your roommate brings a fan but we just kept the windows open and it wasnt a problem. granted i was rarely ever in my room but when we were in the dorms we just drifted towards the coolest one.

Bad news, no air conditioning. If you bring a good fan (or buy/rent for $20-25) you should be alright. My room was burning up and consistently 80+ degrees. I’m from the mountains, and this heat was pretty uncomfortable, as you can imagine. The thing is just keep drinking cold water, gatorade, etc. to stay hydrated. If you spend most of your time hanging outside and keeping yourself busy, you should have no problems.

The two fitness centers are fairly ar apart from one another. For example, one is close to a group of dorms, but the other was like a 10-13 minute walk for me from my dorm. If you’e in Keeney quad, there’s this “confrence room” or something that has awesome A/C…stay in there if you’re burning up.

Yeah I wanted to go again this year, but it would cost like 5 grand for the summer and that’s just a bit too steep at the moment. Oh well, I hope that I can go next year!
