Brown University Fall 2019 Transfer Thread

@Nocreativity1
First of all I already had apologized if you hadn’t noticed (not that asking that is the end of the world, but in this case I rushed to that judgement before reading some of the other posts). Secondly, the “conduct issues” were not related to my character at all, and in fact I went back and checked and they are not even “conduct issues” just write-ups filed by my RA that resulted in no policy violations whatsoever. Finally, I am well aware of how my words represent me and I approached by essays with great care. The recommendations, college report and essays the adcoms reviewed all reflected well on me, I can assure you. This is an anonymous forum where I think I have space to write a bit more candidly than on my college application essays.

I think we should be careful with our words whether it’s anonymous or not. Because although we can develop our own judgements about others, expressing them online can hurt other people’s feelings. We should all encourage each other through these sometimes happy and sometimes upsetting times. This is for everyone though, including myself ? And I think we should leave it at that and not drag this any further. ?

Absolutely shocked I got accepted… Applied as a reach and wasn’t expecting anything. For future applicants looking at this thread, anything is possible just try and apply. Here are my stats in case you were wondering.

Major International Relations
high school gpa 3.3
~ #90 USNews University gpa 3.6 - midterm report 3.8
Act 28 / SAT 1300
Essay: 6-7, just stated I wasn’t happy with what was available here… pretty generic.
Recommendations: 9, these were really good but nothing that they haven’t heard from other applicants

Just have to hear back from FA and then I’ll confirm my spot… hopefully that comes before the 23rd.

Well done!
So jealousssss??

@RoastTheToast congratulations, thanks for sharing stats.

To people who got in: Could you please state whether or not you submitted the video portfolio, and if you did, whether you think it was of high quality / reflected well upon you / made you a more unique applicant? This data point would be much greatly appreciated by me and others I am sure.

Realized I ever put my stats, they’re below for those in future cycles looking for information.

Decision: Accepted as spring sophomore transfer
GPA: High 3.8s from a T20 with significant upward trend in HS GPA.
Concentrations: BEO and education
Essays/Video: Had a strong hook with education through ECs and personal interests which I focused on in my essays and video. Essays were very strong, video was not (and was late).
Accepted: Brown, Vanderbilt, BU, and Colgate | Rejected: Cornell, Amherst, Williams

@bvbchamps
I didn’t even realize the video was for any and all applicants to complete, I seriously thought the “video portfolio” was something only prospective film/media studies were expected to submit. I am now seeing that virtually everyone who got in submitted one. I am seriously stupid, I guess that alone disqualifies from Brown. It was such a silly mistake.

@transferguy2019 Accepted. Didn’t submit video portfolio or any other additional materials.

@transferguy2019 transfer admission is such a random process that I wouldn’t worry about it too much, especially with a great acceptance to Northwestern. Good luck with future decisions!

I was accepted but i didn’t submit the video. I actually didn’t know about the video stuff until i looked at this thread…

Same

@TangerineTigger
@cccccccozhao
Ok that makes me feel somewhat better then. I would rather be rejected for fundamental reasons like lack of long-term commitment to stand out extracurricular activities than for things that were still in my control around the time of the application deadline. I mean I think it still would have helped but only marginally.

@genedorbust
I’m coming from a public university as an in-state student!

@transferguy2019
I had to look up what URM means, but I don’t believe I fit that category and am also not a legacy at Brown. An influential part of my application may also have been that I applied ED to Brown when I was a senior in HS, and that the concentration I applied to transfer for (comparative literature), is not terribly popular (and isn’t offered at my current institution).
Hoping for the best in any other applications you have, and congratulations on NU!

Thank you all so much for the support and congrats to the other admits! Best wishes to all.

@twampytuesdays
Congrats, I’m happy for you, I was really asking about that as a data point and didn’t mean to detract from your accomplishments in any way. Best of luck at Brown, sounds like a great fit for you!

@transferguy2019 my son submitted the video and did not get in (waitlisted, pretty much a reject), don’t believe the video would play a crucial role in admission decision. You should be proud of your acceptance to Northwestern.

Here is something interesting for those with high scores who may have not gotten in: on Brown’s website, it lists letters of rec right after college transcript. So, I do not know if this could indicate that letters of rec are the second most important piece of the application? I feel that this is why I was accepted.

is it crazy that I keep worrying I’ll be rescinded for a B+

@transferperson6

Yes. Rescinds MIGHT only happen if you fail a class, get arrested etc. more drastic things in life than getting an above average grade in a college class.

I’m also worrying because I have 4.0 for my transcript as well as my mid year report but I’m probably getting an 3.7 on for this semester. Dont know if this is going to matter
