My daughter is debating applying ED to Brown vs. Dartmouth. She’s seeking small, intensive seminar classes with engaging professors and interesting, thoughtful peers. She liked both campuses. She thought some students at Brown seemed a bit “self-impressed” (her words). She likes down-to-Earth types, and she enjoys hiking. But most important factor is the level of discussion and engagement in her English and other humanities classes. Any insight on if / how this might differ at Brown vs. Dartmouth? Any insight on social differences is welcomed, too. Thanks so much!
With respect to your daughter’s academic areas of interest, both of these schools should be regarded as top-notch for the study of English literature. If your daughter accepts this premise, then she can reasonably base her decision on personal impressions, as well as on her thoughts on differences in academic and social structures and general environments. Among notable characteristics, Brown offers an especially flexible curriculum, while Dartmouth students tend to like Greek life.
In your daughter’s greater search, colleges such as Amherst, Vassar and Kenyon would make nice complements to the two already on her list.
