i am considering doing dual enrollment for my senior year- taking some courses At the local college and some in my high school. I know top schools don’t accept the credit…
But does it look bad? Is it preferable to take classes in only the high school? Or is it judged based on the rigor of the classes?
Why would any college look down upon a student looking to expand his/her quality of courses if the HS can’t meet the need? Dual enrollment is pervasive.
I suspect it’s all evaluated in the context of what your high school offers. For example, if you take DE calculus but your high school offers AP Calc, that might seem strange - are you going the easier path? But if you have exhausted what your high school has to offer and are doing DE courses to further challenge yourself, it seems as if that would be a positive thing.
I did it & got in. I think it looks good. Then again, my school only offered 4 APs. Like Jennings said that might be good if that’s your situation but weird if your school offers a similar class. Though… I really doubt they’ll look that deep into it. I’d recommend taking classes that your high school probably doesn’t offer, either really advanced classes or really specific ones in subjects high schools don’t really explore too deeply. (ex I took a gender studies class at my local community college)
It hardly requires a deep look to figure out that the high school offers a similar class. This kind of info is in the secondary school report your guidance counselor submits.
I’ve done dual enrollment, and I’ve been looking this stuff up as I apply. Dual enrollment is cool. It gives you some experience as a college student, and lets you take classes in a different environment. Many colleges weigh DE classes more heavily that AP’s. SOME colleges will let you transfer the credits. Brown will not, but they will let you use them for placement.
