Hey @RightCoaster . My son did not consider Isenburg. UMASS is way to crazy for him. All one has to do is look at those towering dorm rooms. As they say, it is a Zoo.
Yep. Still waiting to hear from Bentley. My son has good stats but not great. It is becoming clear to us that he will just not be able to score the best scholarships. Those will go to students with higher numbers. All the schools chase them but they can only attend one and I think a lot of merit aid is left on the table from those who never take them up on the offer.
It really is sad because it is such an inefficient system. You have students that would love to attend but for whatever reason are not matched up with the funds. You then have top students applying to all these top schools, sometimes over a dozen different schools, who give them terrific merit aid only to tell many of them that they will not attend.
@MassDaD68 I understand your frustration, but In all fairness I think that colleges offer merit aid fully understanding that not every student will accept the offer and attend. If every student who was offered merit aid were to accept, the college would likely be in trouble (just as if every student offered admission chose to attend).
In any event, I really do hope things work out for your S. (My S is a fairly recent CPA so I appreciate the difficulty of dealing with paying for not only college but a one year Masters as well).
As an aside, did you consider Marist and/or Siena? Although my S did not attend either school in the end, they both have a lower than typical cost of attendance and good merit aid (in our experience). Both schools have accounting programs and seem to be the size school you S likes. (which was my S’s preferred size college as well). Your S would be a very strong candidate for both schools and I believe they are both still accepting applications (but would probably need to act quickly).
@pct3@CTDad4312 Will any of you be attending any events at Bryant? My son was unable to get into the honors overnight they are having this coming Monday. We are booked for the scholarship dinner the night before the accepted students open house. He needs to look at his schedule to see if he is open on that Saturday. It is funny. This has got to be National accepted student day. Every single college he applied to has it on the same day - Saturday, April 8th. Too funny. So much for trying to visit a few to make up our minds the last minute.
@MassDaD68 You are so right about April 8th being national accepted student day! Unfortunately, I booked our spring break airline tickets that day. My D will be missing out on visiting her colleges. We plan on doing a Bryant Day with Class and an Admitted Student Day. I wonder if it’s worth it to just go for the dinner on 4/7. Bryant may have fallen off my D’s list. I think it best to visit Bryant again just to be sure. I believe Bryant is a great business school that will be rising in the future. However, she has a liberal arts major.
@MassDaD68, by your post above sounds like things are coming together for your DS and Bryant! We are heading up for our visit on April 10th…I will be keeping an eye out for your feedback after your visit!! Enjoy and good luck!!
@pct3 What is your daughter thinking of studying? Bryant’s liberal arts are best geared towards a business angle like Actuary or economics, Not sure about things like literature, sociology, pshyc, english, etc. All liberal arts have to minor in a business topic and all business majors have to minor in a Liberal Arts topic. Wherever she goes, it would be best for you to insist she takes a few econ classes and finance classes. Not necessary to minor but it is knowledge that she should know before entering the world.
@tpcrd66 Yes. Bryant has shot to the top of the list. They were able to give him a very good package and it is doable for us as a commuting student. that extra $15k/year for R&B would be the straw that breaks the back. It would be very nice for him to live there as the vast majority of kids reside on campus but it is a $60k luxury that frankly we don’t really have. There has been some talk on this board about the drinking culture there. More so out of boredom from what I can gather. Not abnormal or unexpected for college life. Not much to do in the immediate area or walking distance. At this point he would just as well not have to deal with that stuff. In a few years, I would suspect he may have a different attitude. Haha.
@MassDaD68, I’m sure things will come together. Who knows maybe they will come back with more? It’s such a business! I’m sure he will do great wherever he lands. Keep us posted on the final outcome!
@MassDaD68 My D will study applied psych at Bryant. I do have concerns about her attending a business school for liberal arts, one reason why Bryant has fallen from her top choice. Good luck with your son!
@happy1 Yes. It has been one we have been targeting form the start. he loved it at first sight when we went for an impromptu visit, the wife loved it at first sight on Open House day. It fills most of the check boxes for us. I would be more than happy if he ends up there. (and ultimately gets hired!).
