Hi! Anyone applied to Bryn Mawr this year? The decision is coming next week, so come and waiting for the “congrats” together! BTW, any opinion, question or info are welcomed for share and discuss!

Hey there! I’m Deb, and I may apply for the EDII round this winter. I’m not exactly sure though - Bryn Mawr is perfect, but SO CLOSE to home!

@doctordebbi – I know many students who live within an hour from BMC (NJ, Philly, etc), so I wouldn’t let that dissuade you. Once you’re on campus it’s pretty easy to become absorbed in that environment. My parents don’t live within driving distance from campus, so I was really grateful to have friends who knew the area and also had families near by that I could celebrate Thanksgiving with, etc.

@englishivy I have lots of questions!!

Are there writing centers at Bryn Mawr? How are the library’s hours? Where are good, quiet places to study (other than the library)? I know there are no kitchens in the dorms - does Bryn Mawr policy allow for students to have microwaves/fridges? Also, are a lot of the textbooks needed for class on reserve at the Library (saves money for textbook costs)? How are the printing and laundry charges at Bryn Mawr?

@doctordebbi –
There is a great writing center located in the main library, Canaday. It’s free for students and you can schedule an appointment online. I used it a lot as first-year student, for everything from brainstorming to proofreading. They’ll also notify your professor to let them know you sought assistance/feedback. Here’s the site: <a href=“Writing Center | Bryn Mawr College”>http://www.brynmawr.edu/writingcenter/

Bryn Mawr has three libraries, but you’ll also have easy access to Haverford’s. During finals week, library hours are extended and the main library is open 24 hours. There is a computer lab and cafe in the lower level of the main library that is 24 hours all semester, so that’s a nice resource. Here are the hours: http://www.brynmawr.edu/is/hours.html

There are so many secret study spots around campus that students use. There are little coves in academic buildings, furnished parlor-type rooms, etc that students have access to.

There are tea pantries on each floor of each dorm. These include communal fridges, microwaves, a sink, a toaster, and cabinets. You can have your own personal fridge in your room, but they ask you just use the appliances provided in the tea pantry. They’re currently building a new dorm that I’ve heard will include more suite-style living with shared kitchens, but I don’t think official plans have been released. If you live in Batten House, a co-op, you’ll have access to a full kitchen because you’ll be expected to make communal meals with your housemates: http://www.brynmawr.edu/residentiallife/floorplans/batten.shtml

Yes, all classes place required texts on reserve at the library. However, you’ll probably want to get your own textbook since you’ll be referencing it frequently and reserve items can only be taken out for three hours or so a day. They’re more for reference than daily personal use. However, you can rent textbooks or buy cheaper copies from students.

Printing and laundry are totally free at Bryn Mawr! There are laundry facilities in each dorm. Haverford students often try to take advantage of our laundry, but are rarely successful.

I’m applying regular decision. I loved everything about Bryn Mawr EXCEPT how close it was to Philly. I hated Philly more than any other city I’ve visited.

Omg really, I loved philly (i need my college to be near a city!) and loved bryn mawr even more. I’m also applying RD

My D has applied RD as well. She loves the school but didn’t get to do an overnight yet. Hoping she can do one if she gets accepted.

@glittervine I’m a current first-year at Bryn Mawr - I can tell you that Bryn Mawr is both very close and pretty far from Philly at the same time. I think it’s a good balance - you can either never set foot in the city, or you can go there often.

And @Aussiemom Yes - there is an admitted students weekend/overnight after decisions go out!

@englishivy @PlasticNebula I have a question. I know Bryn Mawr is an educationally intensive school but how much down time do you think the average student has for going to the city or being involved in different clubs and orgs? Also do students usually hang out at the other schools in the area (on the main line or in the consortium) often?

@Clarg17 That really all depends on what kind of experience you want to have! Bryn Mawr is demanding academically, but the College also wants students to have FUN. In addition to free events on campus, you can also attend events at Haverford and Swarthmore, which are easily accessible by free bus. The College also gives students free train tickets into the city each semester. I was at Haverford about once a week to participate in a club, I took classes at Penn, but I also had friends at other Philly non-consortium schools. I’d say on average I was in the city twice a week. My very first semester I also spent two weekends in New York and two weekends in DC (both are easy/inexpensive to get to via bus). I also know students who interned for credit on the Main Line and in the city (see our Praxis program).

Bryn Mawr is amazing in every aspect. The best if the seven sisters. Amazing facilities, students, faculty, dorms, campus.
i’m not sure if it was already mentioned, but does anyone know when decision letters are usually sent out for Bryn Mawr?
Technically the official decision date on BMC’s site is “by April 1st.” Last year, Bryn Mawr’s decisions were released online March 25th.
Decisions are released around then through Bionic - so make sure you can log in. Keep checking Bionic around that time - I remember, mine just showed up one day. They didn’t email me and tell me that they had posted decisions.
D got an email today stating that decisions are coming soon and will be posted on Bionic portal – it did not indicate that they would email when posted so like previous poster said may need to just keep checking!
I got no such email, is that bad? I’m so nervous! Anyone have any idea how soon “soon” is? Wondering if I can expect to hear back this week or if I’ll have to make it through another. The reporting tools tab appeared in Bionic for me, but then I checked today and it’s gone. In the ED2 round the same thing happened and I got deferred. I’m nervous that this is a really bad sign… Anyone else have and lose the reporting tools tab?
I didn’t see the email at first but just checked my spam and it was in there.
I haven’t received any email like that yet. What does that imply? :-/
nothing for me. I should expect a rejection letter then lol.
