BS Applicant Stats 2013

@AmbiD77: Spatial reasoning? That seems like a strange topic to test students on… :)

@GoldenRatio I’m in a unique accelerated honors geometry course, and the unit we were learning combined spatial reasoning and geometry so it basically ended up being things like euclidean and non-euclidean (eliptical and hyperbolic) geometry

@AmbiD77: Sounds cool! I think I’m doing that in ninth grade.

I searched up those geometries, and got dizzy-in a good way! Awesome shapes! So looking forward to Geometry (so sick of Algebra.)

@GoldenRatio WOW I always forget you’re in 8th grade! You are so mature and smart for your age! Kudos
You probably will, depending on the curriculum of the school you end up at! I’m the biggest math geek humanly possible, so I enjoy it a lot! You’ll definitely have a great time in geometry, especially with proofs and such! :D

@GoldenRatio Your sick of algebra! That was always my favorite, geometry and I just don’t get along…

I feel like the odd one out considering I have internal conflict regarding whether I love algebra or geometry more xD

@confusedonhades: Just like how Geometry and you don’t go along, Algebra and I don’t go along. :)

@AmbiD77: Hahaha, thanks! Geometry sure sounds fun; but what are proofs?

Since you’re the biggest math geek ever, you shouldn’t have a favorite! Just enjoy math for what it is-a way to explain the word around us.

GoldenRatio: I understand. I don’t dislike all parts of geometry I actually really enjoy proofs just not other aspects.

@confusedonhades: Now I’m really curious on what proofs are…XD

Well the one we use most frequently is a two column proof but there are paragraph proofs. The two column proof is two columns(of course) one that has statements such as “ab is congruent to cd” and the other column is reasons which could be something like “given” because that’s what the problem originally gave us. Not sure if this is a great explanation but looking them up online helps.

Here is my daughter’s stats:
Apply for 9th grade, no repeating
gender: F
race: Caucasian/Asian
schools: Exeter, Andover
GPA: 4.0
SSAT: 99% all around
SAT: 98%, 750 +/- 10 all around, I do not think she sent it to AE though.
FA: not sure, hope to get some FA.

@confusedonhades: Okay, I’ll search some examples up! :)

@exeterhopefulmom: Wow, your daughter’s stats are stellar! Good luck to her on Decision Day!

Thanks GoldenRatio, good luck to you too, your stats looks spectacular.
I did not worry until I saw someone here has exact SSAT with my daughter(high 2360s)4.0 GPA was rejected couple of years ago. I guess we never know.

@GoldenRatio, proofs are mostly 2-columns (as confusedonhades mentioned) and you are given information on a shape/figure/problem/equation and you are told that you need to prove something (i.e. prove angle a and angle b are congruent) and then you write a statement in the 1st column, and you reasoning behind it in the second

@AmbiD77: This reminds me of a puzzle; a locking of reason and claim. Haha, I could actually see the sense in this-for a change! ;)

@GoldenRatio It is very much like a puzzle! Yay! I’m glad you understood my description; the students I tutor will start proofs in a month or two and I was worried I wouldn’t be able to explain it to them well enough :)

I’m doing 2-column proofs right now, and there is so much work involved. My teacher makes us list EVERY single statement and reason. If not, she doesn’t give us full credit for the problem. Math is not my favorite subject at all, but it’s alright.

Wow you guys have some really impressing stats.

@AmbiD77: Good luck teaching! I’m sure you’ll be great at it. :)

@keisha404: That sounds brutal. My Algebra teacher takes off points if I don’t show basic arithmetic. Okay, so now 1+1=2 is not a well-established fact?

@GoldenRatio Thank you! :smiley:
@keisha404 we just finished proofs and we’ll be wrapping up with geometry and starting AlgebraII/Trig soon! My teacher is pretty lenient, but only with 20-30 step proofs.
