Hi I am currently in 8th grade and im in the process of applying to boarding schools.
The schools that I'm applying to are.....
Hotchkiss
Lawrenceville
St. Paul's
Peddie
Loomis
Blair
Andover
Brooks
Middlesex
Miss Porter's
Choate

Lawrenceville, Hotchkiss, Andover, St. Paul's, Loomis, and Choate are my top 6 choices. My first choice is Lawrenceville.
I have an A+ average in almost every class. I am always in the Principal's list every marking period.
I received a
99 on verbal
94 on math
90 on reading
and overall 98

I received a 106 on the TOEFL exam.

I'm the class president of my school+ ambassador, I participate in Math club, Yearbook club, ReBel club, student government, Select chorus, and hopefully Jazz band.
I play the piano for my church's praise band, and I am also the accompanist for my school's choir. I am good at art, and won many awards for it.
I also received the presidential award graduating 6th grade.
I am Korean, so I speak Korean, and I also speak English as you can see.

Also, the bad part is I don't participate in any sports. Last year I used to do track... but... that was... eh. I just don't really enjoy sports.
I haven't gone to any interviews yet... will soon in about 2 days..

1) My chances to my top 6 schools? My chances to Lawrenceville? My chances to rest of the schools other than my top 6 choices?

2) Would it affect me a lot since I don't play sports?

3) Interview questions to look out for? any tips?

That’s… a lotta lotta lotta schools. You’ll have to do like 44 different essays for the eleven schools. You also have a lot of competition because you’re Asian and trust me, a bunch of other applicants have similar stats (or even better). Right now, you seem just like a stereotypical Asian student. Instruments, good grades, all that good stuff. You have to understand that these top top schools seek to diversify. I’d say you’re a shoo-in for the lower-tier schools though, if you have the time to complete their essays.

Swampedwithwork
yess.
I agree with you on that.
It’s a lot of schools… and I currently have to write about like… 80 short essays.
but for the essays, i can simply recycle them since they have the same questionss. I have to fix them slightly though.
And… after looking at all these students asking you guys to chance them… I’m really starting to be concerned. They’re like… “woah…” Although Im not good as them, I really want to go to lawrenceville. I heard the interview is pretty crucial in the process, so… all i’m looking forward to is the interview. Hopefully the interviewer is friendly.
Thank you for your advice.

Also, when I look at some of the TOP school’s average SSAT scores, its around like 80s, or maybe even 70s; how is that possible? I thought they only received like… perfect scores or close to perfect?

Well, some schools averages are higher, but many are in the 80’s and some even in the 70’s. But as you said it is just an average and there are people who have gotten way more and way less. You have a great chance and on the topic of athletics, it’s okay to not do a sport, as long as you are using the time you would be doing a sport to do something productive like community service or other EC’s.

urbanflop: yess that’s sort of my question though… how did these kids with like… 70s get into those schools? My brothers assume that its because of their legacy… and maybe their parents and relatives went? Also, their family members might have donated some money?
But I just think its ridiculous.

Rohitht: yes… I know. A lot of people are… way. way better or just… very comparable to me. That’s what makes this process exciting. I wanted to go to boarding school because I wanted something challenging in life… and if i get in, it would be even better for me :)

latinlad: I knoww… I do have a lot of schools.
I had to write about 80 short essays… and fill out like 11 applications @.@
I felt bad for the teachers too. I really wanna do something with Art, but I didn’t wanna make my art teacher write 11 forms. For supplementary recommendations, they don’t even have common app. But, for the major academic teachers that are required have common apps, so all they have to do is just … photocopy them.
I had to distribute 11 supplementary forms to about 3 teachers; art, civil, and spanish.

I think you have a great chance. Obviously being asian doesn’t do you any favors but people can be a little harsh… I know people with (slightly) worse stats and no hooks who got in although they were caucasian. With interviews just be chatty and be prepared to know why you want to go to that particular school. search for interview threads on CC there are plenty that list questions. Just know what you like about yourself and why you want to attend boarding school. Not having a sport isn’t great but just make sure you let the schools know that you plan to take some up when you attend their school. I don’t think the schools will like that your appyling to so many schools, so be prepared to have a good reason for why! Best of Luck and don’t worry it’s to late to change anything; your definitely in the running and thats all any non-adcom can say

urblanflop: yesyes… arghh. but, although I’m not one of those hooks… If I get in without those things, I would be much happier with myself since it’s not really “cheating” its kind of more fair or harder.
But, if I get into one of the prestigious schools, i really want to donate to the school and increase my child’s chances of getting in :P

BlueRaven1: Thank you so muchh. I just came back from most of the interviews except for Lawrenceville and blair. the interviews were so much fun! Especially the Andover one. My interviewer was a christian and so am I. We really talked about things that we usually don’t during interviews. He was a very profound guy. and at the end, he said “god bless you, any school whether it is andover or any other, you’ll become successful.”
he wasn’t one of those superficial interviewers that said “She’s fabulous, or fantastic! but, he really was memorable. I still can’t forget his eyes and how he stared at me. It was as if he was reading my mind :P”

musisat: well if you’re like amazing. you’re probably gonna get in. but if youre one of the middle ones that they might ponder upon, they might take financial aid into consideration…

BUT.
I heard andover has like this blind financial aid thing.
where… financial aid should not be one of the reasons of the admission rejection or somethingg?
so basically, if you get in, they’ll support you as much as possible to make you go to the school with out any financial problems.

I know, I say it out loud too! It’s just I don’t see how people do it when they take the time to type. If admissions officers (although I doubt many would check) see kids using the word like left and right here and recognize you, how would that reflect on you? Not trying to be paranoid, but I just want to put that idea out there because I know how badly we all want to get in here.

esther 3230,
i’m a sophomore right now,
and i applied to boarding schools 2 years ago.
i’m korean, and at the time, i even LIVED in korea.
i had the same SSAT score as you,
but looking back, my grades in middle school were average (not as good as yours!)
but hey! dont let bs consume your life.
i literally kept CC open on a tab while doing my homework, and refreshed it every 30 minutes to see if new posts were up. needless to say, my grades dropped :[
all this to say
youre done with applications, sit back, relax!
with stats not as impressive as yours, i got into 3 of the schools youre applying to (mind you, i didnt apply to 11(!) schools) (;
in the meantime, keep your grades up, and livee your life. theres no point of worrying now, youve turned everything in, worrying will only turn you prematurely gray.
so good luck,
im sure march 10 will bring good news!

^insert: in case youre wondering,
the reason i only have 4 (now 5) posts is because i made a new account for college applications.
my old username probably has 100+ posts under it.
