I heard that BS in pure math is not that marketable and that most people who study these go into grad or phd programs anyway. What about a BS applied math (without going to grad or phd) ? How are employment prospects for BS applied math majors among the applied math majors around you?

Common destinations for applied math majors are finance, actuarial, and computer software jobs. Of course, this does mean choosing an area of application that is interesting and relevant, and taking supplemental courses in those subjects.

Math and applied math are not typically “heavy” majors with requirements, so it may be possible to take both a lot of pure math courses and some applied courses during a typical 8 semesters (especially if you start out ahead of freshman calculus like many math majors).

Also consider that the jobs available to an applied math are generally available to a pure math major, as long as you choose an area related to an application.
