Hey,
So I'm interested in majoring in math in college, but I was wondering if you take Applied Math as an Undergrad major, can you still take a math PHD? Or are math PHD's for pure math undergrad majors?
Thanks

Phd in Pure Math are for Pure Math majors...

Ease up with the elitism guys, c'mon now.

If you take real analysis and abstract algebra as part or on top of an applied math major, you would have the basic foundation for a PhD in pure math. So yes, it is possible to switch from applied to pure math, but you would probably have to explain the change in direction in your Statement of Purpose.

i was wondering about this too - except for a computational math major

I just re-read the original question and now I am not so sure if I understood it correctly: did you ask if it is possible to switch from an applied undergraduate math major to a pure math major at the graduate level? Or was the question if there are PhDs in applied math or if all math PhDs are actually pure math programs?

The first question has been addressed before. If it's the latter, be assured that there are PhD programs in different areas of both pure and applied math. Applied math PhDs are typically labeled as applied, while a "PhD in math" usually refers to pure math.

Thanks for the replies guys.

So there are applied math PhD programs?

And, if one were to do an applied math PhD, would that affect career placements in academia as opposed to doing a regular/pure math PhD.

Basically, my question is what does an applied math PhD do after they graduate, and what does a pure math major do after they graduate?

applied math is for actuaries and that whole route. yes there is a phd in applied math. pure math majors tend to become professors however they are known to consult as an actuary or computational mathematician from time to time. its more about what youre interested in. practice, or theory? applied, or pure?
