BS Class of 2019 Thread

Are we sad that our kids are juniors? I feel so old.

How about junior in college? How did that happen? You guys are youngsters. :stuck_out_tongue:

The day before junior classes start in August, ChoatieSergeant takes his oath of commitment. Until then, he can still walk away from the academy with no penalty or obligation. Many cadets leave at this point. Doesn’t look like he’ll be one of them. Sigh.

(I follow this thread because my kid is class of '19, too, so I’m pretending I’m one of you.)

Oh my. Sigh on your behalf, @ChoatieMom . If my son were doing what yours is, I would be both unspeakably proud of him and unspeakably furious with him.

@twinsmama, that about sums it up.

@ChoatieMom Leaving a military education after the sophomore year was infamously known as “two and screw.” Those who stay at the academies tend to be looking at it as a career (and can retire after 20 years with a nice pension). If not, they still have major advantages over their peers (for promotions and ideal duty locations) who “only” went through ROTC or Officer Candidate School. B-)

@onthewestfence: Yep, and leaving after the five year commitment is known as the “five and dive.”

@ChoatieMom Any stats on what percentage do the “two and screw”? Just curious.

I don’t know what past stats have been, but all are curious to see what the drop is this round post this election. The cadets serve the constitution, not the person in office, but there has been much vocal dissension and the expectation is that the drop rate could be higher this time. We’ll see.

In general, though, USMA attempts to commission about 1,000 lieutenants with each class; most classes end upon the high 900s. This past incoming class was about 1,300, so they expect to lose about 300 between R-Day and graduation for various reasons.

@doschicos: I see from the official SA forum that, typically, between 50-75 cadets will not affirm, so it will be interesting to see what this year’s number is.

I guess since the president is the Commander in Chief plus some inflammatory rhetoric on the global stage, I can understand that some heavy contemplation is taking place among some cadets.

Thanks for sharing the info, @ChoatieMom.

ChoatieLieutenant might get a different Commander in Chief by that time.

When does BS End of year school results typically come out?

For my kids, it was no more than a week after school let out. Teachers wanted to move on to summer as well.

Ok, I will ask daughter when she come back from friend’s house. Thanks

@infinityprep1234 Does your daughter’s school have a parent portal where grades are posted?

@doschicos thanks, I was not aware about it as I though only my daughter has access to the portal. Well I called her and she told me how to log into. Yes grades are out but she did not mention it as she thought it was not important and I was not aware about it as I did not ask her. Therefore, first time I was able to log into portal where I can see comments and grades. Teachers provided very thoughtful comments and she did maintain her performance like last year.

“she did not mention it as she thought it was not important”

Got to love teenagers. Glad she’s doing well though!

In August, our daughter is going to visit and live with one of her close girl friend’s house in a different country. The family is very well off. They are fully aware that our daughter is on need based aid. But friend and her family has been wonderful people and always welcome our daughter with open arms. This girl friend friend is very intelligent and a thoughtful person and extremely good influence on my daughter. What is an appropriate gift for this family as our budget is not very big? Any suggestions. Thanks

@infinityprep1234 How about something local/from your state?

@infinityprep1234 Or how about a nicely framed photo of the two friends?
