Thanks @AppleNotFar those are wonderful suggestion
Kido did very good with the AP exams scoring 5s
How does Math SAT II 780 and science 710 looks. No idea if they are competitive, ok or bad scores? Any clue
@infinityprep1234 look at the national rankings. My son got a 780 on math 2- this is a 72% national rank. He will be retaking after actually studying this time.
@infinityprep1234, those scores are fine. The challenge with math 2 is that every kid who is good in math takes it. I believe that 20% of the test takers scored 800. I would leave well enough alone. If he wanted to take another test I would probably look at another subject rather than repeating one of these. From everything I have heard, the SAT II does not figure prominently in admissions decisions.
@skieurope is saying in other thread that abobe certain score there is no point to retake as only few highly competitve kids takes SAT II, ski any comments from you,
@vegas1 I think I may ask my daughter to retake chemistry as AP class did not cover all the SAT II material, provided she wants to.
Thanks @gardenstategal, she is good in math and science but somehow by going to prep school she is performing better in history, English and Foreign Language, and she has found new love in these subjects
@infinityprep1234 , the foreign language ones are used for placement /exemptions at some schools, so that’s not a bad one to take if her talent and interests lead her there. But unless she needs 3, I can’t see those scores being a problem.
I’m just going to restate what I’ve said elsewhere. Subject Tests are just one part of the application package. There is absolutely no reason to retake a 780; the time is better spent focusing on other aspects of the process. 800’s and crappy essays will torpedo chances more than less-than-perfect Subject Test scores. A student that gets rejected with a 780 would not have gotten accepted with an 800, IMO.
If you are concerned about the percentile, it is important to understand that for several subjects, the percentiles are depressed because so few colleges request Subject Tests, that the one that do are the ultra selective ones. As a result, it is the high achieving kids taking the tests. No AO is sitting on the floor cross-referencing scores with percentiles.
The 710 might, and I repeat might, be more problematic. If the target schools are at the HYPMS level of sub 10% acceptance rates, then yes, the student might want to retake or try a different subject. If the targets are 10-20% acceptance rate, I think 700+ is fine.
780 on Math II is fine. The difference from 800 is probably a question or two. 800 (usually up to 4-5 wrong questions) is 80% not much higher than 72%. No need to retake.
It is eerily quiet on our 19er board. I-)
Hope everyone is having a good summer. :-h
S2 is having a good summer catching up video gaming.
We are having a hectic summer, so I am behind on the usual things.
Next three weeks, S2 has a dentist visit, an eye exam, and the annual physical. He is also getting the last, third meningitis b shot, trumenba, together with S1 who is going to college.
He grew couple inches, so I will have to check where his pants fall. Hopefully they don’t show too much ankles. sigh. more clothes shopping.
His first AP score was good. SAT subject math 2 is done also. He will retake SAT subject chemistry and physics sometime during the year.
He is scheduled to take his first SAT on Aug. 26th and then off to school on September 2nd.
A Junior? Where did the time go?
I’m right there with you on all of the appointments. We are done with eyes, but in the next week, we have physical, vaccinations, dentist, and driving test. We take him back over labor day weekend. We haven’t even thought about clothes shopping yet.
Daughter is finishing her summer research internship, learned a lot, professor and his team are very happy, Professor let the daughter workh on some cutting edge technology, after two days rest at the end of the week, daughter flies to Europe to vacation with her boarding school friend. Between driving lesson and summer activities, she was quite busy. After math camp, second daughter will volunteer in local community. Wow summer is flying so quickly
I think it’s time to join this board…my son will be off to BS this weekend. We are busy packing and he is finishing summer reading and preparing for SAT Subject Test (more below).
@payn4ward - can I ask re Meningitis shot - how many shots are there, and is this the one college students normally get? I think I’d like DS to get it before he goes.
Also stressing re SAT2 Math exam. He is scheduled to take it this Sat 8/26. He knows how to do all of the problems but is too SLOW. He is only getting to about 35 of the 50. Any thoughts on whether we should delay this test until he can get faster? (He will be taking Calc this year, took Pre-Calc already). If we had known this, he would have signed up for regular SAT, but now it’s too late to switch. Fitting in all these tests is so hard!
@sunnyschool While 35/50 ~ 710/800 would be a great score, why do you need it now if he will graduate in 2019? Why not take it next Summer instead?
Daughter just returned back from vacation. She has a wonderful time in Europe. We underestimated the friend’s family wealth. They are very very very very upper echelon in terms of money. However the friend and her family treated, my daughter with extremely modest background with open arms and invited to her to their private family events.
I just can not say enough that how prep school has been so wonderful to her in academic and social development.
@sunnyschool Welcome to the thread!
It is called Meningitis Group B vaccination. It is a different strain from the one my kids got when they were babies.
I think this particular one is not yet required by the schools, but colleges require the baby one, regular meningitis shot. I decided to have my kids vaccinated for Group B as well since it is a risk in dormitory situations, colleges, military, etc. Many college students get this vaccine.
Our doctor gave Trumenba. It was supposed to be 3 shots – 2nd dose after 1-2 months, and 3rd shot after 6 months.
Trumenba recently announced that two doses for young adults work as well – 2nd shot after 6 months.
I did not keep up with their shot schedule, so boys got the 2nd shot after 4 months. Doctor says it is good enough. So they only got 2 doses at a shorter than recommended interval.
Indeed, fitting all those tests are hard. I would leave it up to your child. Some kids do a lot better in real testing situations with adrenaline rush and all. Very few (perhaps zero) colleges require all SAT Subject test scores, so he can take it again if he is not satisfied with the outcome.
@payn4ward Thanks! Went to ped a couple days ago and got a similar MenB shot…the other one, which requires 2 doses (I think a month apart, but she said it’s flexible).
And thanks re the testing…he will take the SAT Math2 tomorrow and see how it goes. Not sure if he should try the SAT in November (he feels ready for that now, but will have little additional prep time with fall sport), or wait until March.
Is it a good idea to visit the college representative at your boarding school while you are still a junior? Or only the senior should visit the college reps when these folks are at your boarding schhol?
If it is a good idea, whom do you visit? How do you select which college reps? College list includes ives and top non ivies.
