just returned from Family Weekend. DS loves school! He is in his element and so happy! Everyone there is so nice and down to earth! I was able to watch him run a PR and see how collegial his team is. I even volunteered to meet prospective students and their families during interview day. After spending the free weekend with him and replenishing his snacks, decorating his room for Halloween, shopping for winter necessities (he thought tennis shoes would be fine for walking through the snow)…I had to drop him off and head to the airport. I finally lost it. Those few days made me realize how much I like hanging out with that kid…and how much I miss him. :((
@“Nico.campbell” SO glad to hear from you and see things are going well!!!
@buuzn03 so awesome he’s happy! and kudos to you for giving back to the next group of families
@buuzn03, I’m so glad your son is so happy and that everything has worked out so well! We are headed up for parents’ weekend this weekend, and then DS will be home for a few days for mid-fall break. We have been to a few of his games, both home and away, so we’ve seen him but have hardly had a complete conversation since he’s always on his way somewhere (usually the trainers’ room). I’m curious about everything – his teachers, roommate, other parents (I’ve met a few at registration and soccer games, but not many), friends, etc.
@CTMom21 meeting his friends, teammates and parents was one of the best parts of the trip! I hope you have a great time! It is nice to finally get to spend some time with them-- just be ready for the waterworks (maybe I am just a wimp) when it is time for drop off-- because that is when it finally hit me! :(( Seriously, though, seeing him thrive in his environment makes it all worthwhile! So excited for you!
Have fun!!
Thanks @buuzn03! I haven’t shed any tears yet, but it may get harder once he actually comes home and then has to go back.
Just flew back into town after our first parents’ weekend. We’re grateful to the school for all of the programming it made available to us, but apart from meeting DC’s teachers, we spent the large bulk of our time watching a sporting event, meeting DC’s friends, and just hanging out, talking to, and shopping a bit with, our child. As parents new to the boarding school world, we could not be happier with what we witnessed. Our child seems content and entirely comfortable in the new environment, has formed a wonderfully diverse and lovely friend group, is comfortable with the academics, and has jumped headfirst into sports and ECs. In-person confirmation is so much more satisfying than the piecemeal information we receive through texts and rather hurried phone calls.
@CaliPops isn’t that the best feeling? That is how it was for us! Just seeing how at home and happy DS was made it all worthwhile!
Could not agree more, @buuzn03.
That’s great @CaliPops! I dropped of DS last night after Parents’ Weekend and a few days of mid-fall break, and we had pretty much the same experience. DS has definitely found his place and – also being BS first-timers – we really didn’t know what to expect, but Parents’ Weekend was delightful. We were impressed with his teachers and how well they seem to know him, and impressed with how hard he is working and how motivated he is. We’ve been to some of his games, but nearly all the kids on his team are international or from far away, so there are usually just a couple of parents. It was fun to watch with a lot of parents, and we met so many nice families. It was nice having him home for a few days without all the normal rat race, but I also feel like we’re all back to our normal schedule today. I am glad all of these kids who worked so hard last year are having a great experience this year.
@CTMom21 that’s so true! Our kids worked so hard to get to this point and without knowing what they were in for—it is SO good to see them flourish! So glad everyone seems to be doing so well, so far!
This reminds me of D2. During her first English test, she picked her head up and looked around. She thought to herself how lucky she was to be there at Choate. It warmed my heart. She understood how lucky she was and the sacrifices we parents had made. Wishing you all similar revelations in your students! Now and in the near future!
I’ve been following the Instragram accounts for a handful of schools, and I’ve found a number of school rivalry posts, in particularly, to be entertaining. Looks like they’re having lots of fun, certainly more than I have at work (but that is admittedly a low bar).
Well…DS just texted that he made it back to Boston in one piece and is waiting on the school shuttle at the airport. It was SO good to have him home…and although hard to let him go, it was neat to see him so ready to get back into the BS swing of things. I couldn’t be more thankful for him being given this opportunity! I hope everyone else had a great holiday with their kids and cheers to only 3 1/2 weeks until Christmas break!!! =D>
Well, sending SwimKid back to school this time was a lot tougher than his last visit. It was the first time we spent more than 2 days with him in months. SwimKid2’s hug with him was extra long and his eyes were filling up. At least it’s only a couple weeks till we have them back again!
DS just emailed to let us know I booked his flight a day too late, and no shuttles will be going to the airport on Saturday (the original schedule had them getting out Saturday, but now they’re getting out Friday at 11am). I can’t afford to change the ticket at this point…in fact, we bought it early fall when there was a huge fare sale…sigh. Another epic mom fail.
^ugh! So sorry! Friend in Boston for a night and uber? Sometimes it feels like you just can’t win!
@gardenstategal that is what we are trying to work out now. His “appointed guardian” is there, but he doesn’t know her…I think I’m going to have to call in a favor from a fellow parent. I just feel like an idiot!
@buuzn03, As someone who was a relatively local parent, I was always delighted when situations like this came up. Got to meet a friend and have an outlet for all that pent up momming, all at someone else’s request!
Can he crash with a Day student, get a ride to the airport some other way?
