@CaliPops DS told us kids were sneaking out of the health center with flu to go to class. I’m like…don’t breathe their air!!! He then pulled out his Lysol, purell and ski neck warmer (Shaun White style) to show me how he’s been going to class. 8-|
I’ve wondered that about boarding schools, if there are times when everyone on campus get sick or, at a school like DS’s where they’re relatively isolated, if they’re less vulnerable. With the flu being particularly bad in CT, I asked DS if the faculty had talked to them about being smart – hand sanitizer, hand washing, etc. – and he said “no…Oh yeah, they did!” When he was home for mid-winter break I worried about him being out and about and with friends. So far the flu shot he got as the first thing when he stepped onto the campus in the fall seems to be holding up, and hopefully spring break will give everyone the chance to get away and get healthy.
Ours has avoided anything worse than a light cold so far, but it sounds like the bugs are spreading. My wife had a minor panic attack, texted a bunch of precautions (that mirror the school’s frequent admonitions to the students), and used a line from The Croods: “Never not be afraid.”
@buuzn03, now yours is a prepared kid! Mine is more likely to hug friends regardless of visible symptoms…
@CaliPops The only times we have heard about subject tests were in direct response from the subject teachers to parents’ questions during Parents’ Weekend or via email. That said, the AP Bio teacher is specifically reviewing for the Bio Subject TEst after the AP Exam is over. Even then, it was a general recommendation of when the subject matter would have been completed in class.
Schools are pretty good about educating the kids re: germs - signs in bathrooms, talks in dorms, emails, etc.
When there are bad outbreaks, the health center can reach its max. One year (might have been the big H1N1 year 2009-10) my kid came home when sick because we lived fairly local and the health center was at or past capacity.
So many “little” details that we hadn’t considered before embarking on this journey. @carpoolingma, we will probably reach out to the academic adviser near the end of spring term to get a better feel for what makes sense.
First BS birthday – CTKid turned 15 this morning! It’s nice that spring break starts tomorrow, so despite having his birthday during test week, he gets to come home and celebrate with family this weekend. He sent me an (unflattering) birthday selfie this morning but was too busy to talk to us last night due to dorm cleaning (definitely a good thing to do before break).
He has had a lot of snowy birthdays – March coming in like a lion and all – but this is a good one: Nor’easter across southern NE, with about a foot of snow predicted in northwestern CT!
Happy birthday, CTkid!!! I can’t believe they’re on break…I have to wait another week. I’m sure he’ll get spoiled while at home, though, @CTMom21 Enjoy!!
Thank you @buuzn03! Break starts tomorrow after classes, and it’s going to be pretty mundane, plus more snow on tap for next week. Hopefully by the end of break there will be some semblance of spring.
Hard to believe these kids are 2/3 of the way through their first year of high school. Freaks me out!!
@CTMom21 , you’ll be saying that over and over again. The high school years really flew by! Blink and it’s over… Really wish there was a way to slow down the time together.
^^i know!! DS us already mapping out his schedule for next year and taking placement tests for upper level classes. Crazy to think last year at this time we were just praying to get in!
My son3 will be joining the BS Class of 2021 at St. Paul’s School this fall. We will be going up over spring break for a revisit day. I’m excited for him. Last year, the idea of boarding school was new to us. He applied to 6 schools (the predictable ones), and was waitlisted to 5 of those 6. This year, he applied to the same ones and was accepted to SPS, which was his favorite school all along. I’ve been lurking here for a while, but haven’t posted much.
Welcome @KentuckyMomma !!!
thanks@buuzn03
Welcome @KentuckyMomma! Congrats to your son! I have some friends who are class of 2020 and they love it there!
Congratulations to you and your son, @KentuckyMomma!
Congrats! Well done on the persistence. I don’t think I’d have the stomach for it.
Can you believe they are starting their final term of the year??? Dropped SwimKid back to school last night. I’m so glad he will be home for Easter. This was a tough one for me!
No, I cannot. I knew intellectually that this would happen – that high school would go by in the blink of an eye – and now it’s happening, and it’s giving me panic attacks. High school is 1/12 over. The time definitely goes faster when they’re not at home.
Ugh…jealous @momof3swimmers … DS doesn’t get to come home for Easter. I can’t stand it.
