BS Class of 2021 Thread

Thank you for the info buuzn03; it’s interesting. The no Greek life sounds awesome, as does the description of the student body. That’s so strange about the informal dress of the tour group; at least put on a polo shirt and a pair of jeans. The tree thing is funny, but the MS/BS dearth of offerings is legitimate. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts and ?!

Does anyone know what state they look at for the NMSQT? The state you reside in? Or the state you tested in? DSs scores are iffy for The state he schools at but he’d probably make it for our home state…

The cut-off score for boarding schools is equal to the highest score in their region (i.e., the group of states in which the boarding school is located), so the home state does not matter.

For example, I believe the NE states constitute one region, and I think NY, NJ, PA, DE and MD are another. (I’m not 100% sure on that that, but that’s what I could ascertain on a quick search.)

@CaliPops please don’t take it personally when I say I do not like this answer! ???

@buuzn03 I get ya. As an FYI, one can find the regional groupings here: https://about.collegeboard.org/region-offices

@CaliPops is right. The highest-scoring state in the NE region is usually MA, so that would be the cutoff for a student attending a NE BS with a substantial OOS student population.

Well, poo.
What I did find interesting was this…I was traveling on business this weekend …and yesterday, I was in Florida flying back home. I got an email from the college board saying DSs scores were available. So I clicked on the link and voila, there they were. I had to look briefly because I was boarding the flight. When I landed, I tried to check them again more closely. But…I landed in Texas, so it says I won’t be able to view them until tomorrow. So crazy!

It’s not where you took the test or even where you live that is the basis for the score release…it’s where you physically are. One minute I could access scores—the next, I couldn’t.

I was curious so I looked up MA scores needed to qualify. Basically near perfect scores? Oof. I am with you @buuzn03 that is a rough hurdle.

^yes…DS and I figured it out…you could not have missed more than two questions total. ??

Well, so much for my post on the BS 2020 thread. DS just told me last night that I’m not allowed to discuss college applications, acceptances or rejections with ANYONE when the time comes. Sigh.

Surely he didn’t mean US @buuzn03.

I just dropped DS off at the airport. I HATE these goodbye days. Especially this one where he calculated that it was gonna be (in his words) “a long haul during dark winter days” until he sees us again. This is the first time he didn’t seem eager to go back to school. This is also the first year he’s really been having to work really hard (they warned us about junior year).
Here’s to a healthy, enjoyable and successful end to Fifth form all of my fellow ‘21 families! I think the whirlwind process to graduation is about to start!

Yeah, although I feel it’s course and it’s time for DS to get back to his routine, I have been hearing the whole time about the stress level this year and how rough winter term is. It’s definitely a long, dark, dreary winter, and DS has an extra class this term and has a scheduling issue that needs to be worked out. Plus his ACTs did not go well and he is increasingly frustrated and rattled over all the testing. Fun stuff. One day at a time, right?

Good luck to your son, @buuzn03, and all the other 2021s. And safe travels to all heading back to school over the next couple of days.

Hugs to you and your son @CTMom21 !

We will get through this one step at a time…and before we know it, this race will be over and a new one begun!

That’s right, @buuzn03, and thank you :-). I keep telling DS that this college process is going to fly by, so just get through the tough parts and enjoy the remainder of high school.

FWIW, I think BS kids are more immersed in the high school experience than in the thinking about college one. The second happens, for sure, but the nature of BS (and the distance from parents) tends to keep them a little more in the present than we are as parents. And yeah, junior year really is a killer. The classes are the hardest they’ve ever been and they know that it’s the year that will get the most attention when they apply to college. Hard not to be stressed. Sending good thought to you and your kids…

Thanks, @gardenstategal, and I suspect that being back and school and into the regular routine, it’s just the normal grind and you’re right that they’re not as consumed by the college stuff as we are. It was top of mind at the beginning of break since they just assigned CCs, and he got his ACT scores. Otherwise, we’re in a college lull for now.

I was very happy to hear from parents of older kids freshman year that winter team tends to be rough on everyone. I think he is counting down till the next break already!

We just received the email from the CC telling us the ‘21s college application process year has begun. Their winter break Saturday classes are focused on everything college application, so I’m thinking it will be back at the forefront of conversations.

Interestingly, SMS moved from Naviance to SCIOR, I think? Is this a new trend? I have no experience or knowledge of either, but had at least heard of Naviance.

Cate switched to Scior, too. Don’t know much about it, or why the change. Don’t know Naviance, either for that matter. Not quite our time yet as DS is a sophomore.

It looks like it has features for managing and tracking the process? Not just admissions data.

Someone mentioned something called College Kickstart? Sound familiar?
