bs/dds at Detroit Mercy or Michigan?

Hey guys, I recently heard back from Detroit Mercy and they accepted me into their accelerated bs/dds dentist program... I also got accepted to Michigan's college of engineering... I'm conflicted. I've always wanted to be a doctor but I have also considered being a dentist as well. I was originally planning on doing biomedical at Michigan while doing premed reqs then going into med school there but now I can just go to Detroit Mercy and become a dentist in 7 years... What are your thoughts? I just want some helpful tips and advice from people that may have been in my situation or even if you haven't been in my situation, just give me your input! Thanks. P.S. I love Michigan... That's why I'm so torn on what to do... Oh, and I'm fine with being a dentist or a doctor, both jobs will suit me just fine as I like them both just as much but being a doctor is more appealing to me...

Before you make a decision, shadow an MD and a DDS. That will give you a better idea as to what to expect in each field.

You may also want to pose your question on The Student Doctor Network’s medical and dental forums:

<a href=“Pre-Medical (MD) | Student Doctor Network”>Pre-Medical (MD) | Student Doctor Network;

<a href=“Medical Students (MD) | Student Doctor Network”>Medical Students (MD) | Student Doctor Network;

Either way, the academic requirements for medical school and dental school are similar - 2 semesters of biology, 2 semesters of general chemistry, 2 semesters of organic chemistry, and 2 semesters of physics so you are not necessary locked into medicine or dentistry at this point even if you choose Detroit Mercy.

I would go to Mercy if:

There is a reasonable likelihood you would follow through on the DDS program - otherwise the guarantee isn’t that helpful.

The accelerated program is important because of the cost savings. I don’t know how this will work itself out because U-D is private and U-M is public.

You can turn the basketball game on TV and watch the Maize Rage and not kill yourself because you’re not one of them.

I would choose Michigan because

 1. If you decide to change your major, it’s much easier and your new major will still most likely be Top 10 in the nation
 2. Umich has a better campus life
 3. To get to UDM, you drive by a prison (it’s very unsafe, has to be gated)
 4. No spirit (at UDM)
 5. Alumni connections at UM are awesome; easier to get a job once you graduate
 6. You love Michigan

Of course, the decision in the end is up to you. For me, I just get a negative vibe off UDM but it is different for every person. Good luck! :)

Thanks guys for the replies. Cost-wise, Detroit Mercy ends up being around $300,000. Michigan+ med school is around 270,000. So cost isn’t even an issue… These are really rough estimates, correct me if I’m wrong. I think I will be accepting Michigan’s offer into their engineering school. This is such a heart-wrenching decision for me and apparently it’s due next week, so it’s not helping… I appreciate the helpful replies, they really helped me with the decision.

Hey. I am a junior in high school. I don’t know if you will ever read this, but what did you do besides your grades to get accepted to the UDM 7 year dental program? I have a 3.5 and a 32 ACT, but is there anything I can do to differentiate myself from the rest of the pack?
