i know that in order to become an accountant you need to earn a degree in Accounting. I go to SUNY Stony Brook and they only offer a Business Major, with a couple concentrations to choose from, one being accounting. Will this be looked at as an equivalent when i go to apply for a job at accounting firms or willl this pose a problem? Thank you.

It’s a stupid ass idea considering you need a certain amount of accounting credits to sit for the CPA. I’m assuming the business with concentration in accounting is less focused.

this is the business major- i already have a BS in Psych so im double majoring. The program requires you to have a minor if you are a business major BUT if you are double majoring the minor is not neccesary

You should check with the NY State Board of Accounting and see if you will be getting all the accounting courses that you need for the exam. If not, you will need to take some courses elsewhere. For example, you probably will need a course in cost accounting and advanced accounting.

Personally, I would have gone to another school that had accounting as a major. Ask your advisor about this too.

thank you.
i was not really set on accounting when i applied to schools. i was in a pre med program at Stony Brook.

which specific test are you refering to? CPA?

Also this is what the website says-

To fulfill the education requirement for licensure, you must complete:

an accounting program registered by the Department as licensure-qualifying, or
an accounting program that is accredited by an accrediting body accepted by the Department. Currently the Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) is accepted, or
a program determined by the Department to be equivalent to a registered program, or
15 years of public accounting experience acceptable to the State Board for Public Accountancy

Stony Brook accounting does not show up as AACSB accepted…how do i figure out if it qualifies for the other option?

I startedcollege at 19 went part time for a while then transfered. My major is physical science. However, I know I have to go to graduate school. And I don’t really want that if I can help it. I struggled with my major for a while, but now I find myself thinking again. Math isn’t my strongest subject, but I know I can learn. That’s because I can put in the time. How much would you make after graduation? Do you need a graduate education after?

Same here. Most of my friends will me almost done school soon.If I keep on the academic path I’m headed I will have spent more time and money in college and earn less than those majoring in buisness. But math isn’t my strongest subject, so I’m thinking ALOT!

What does the complete list look like???
