BS/MD Alumnus

Over the past few days, I have had several conversations with a family member that is currently interested in applying to BS/MD programs in the next few years. As someone who went through this application cycle 10+ years ago and am now currently a practicing physician, I was happy to provide my perspectives and experiences. I think I was able to shed some light about the uniqueness of these combined programs and also raise additional questions that will require significant introspection.

College Confidential definitely was not this big when I was applying to college. The competition and caliber of applicants get stronger every year. As a new parent, I’m scared to think what sort of expectations will be in place in 18 years. I applied to a local BS/MD program without any information in addition to all the “top” colleges. Looking back, I don’t think I understood the gravity of the decision I made until well into medical school. There are definitely some things I would do differently but I have no regrets over the decision I made. I’m happy to answer questions about the application process, transition into medical school, residency, and attending life.

@Doc2Parent Thanks for your offer to help students and parents. Every year 2 threads are created, one for general discussion (which gets lot of posts and response) and one late in the cycle around April to post the results. So it will be helpful if you can respond to posts in the discussion thread which will get active once the cycle starts.

I am a parent of 2016-17 BS/MD student. All that I can say is 10+ years is EON. Every year it is getting more competitive and more applicants as they get to know.
