*** BS/MD Interview Notification for Class of 2014***

SLCMOm I didn’t realize you were there we were there too. I think you described it very well. 2 of the interviewes interviewed 2 people. The interviews were all very different. My son who is very interested in bioethics would have loved to get bioethics questions and didn’t get a single one.

@IMGDAD
Thanks very much! She didn’t think it went particularly well, but by now she is pretty reconciled to the randomness of the process, as you put it. Basically, she will be very happy if she gets into a program, and she will be very happy if she gets into a “normal” school. It has been a great learning experience and again thank you, and everyone else, for the very useful advice and encouraging support.

@SLCMom-- Thanks for all the information!! It’s super helpful. Was your daughter’s interview mostly about herself or about ethics? Good luck! I hope she gets in! :D

@starlight27
My daughter’s interviewer went through her supplemental application and talked about her research and ECs. No ethics question. And @Midhelper said no ethics question for his/her son too. It is another student who reported getting nothing but ethics! Thanks for the good luck wishes! Same to you too!

@SLCMom, it is difficult to judge because of the subjectivity of the interview. My daughter was “unlucky” to have got a “bad” interviewer at AMC, but she was definitely very luck when she interviewed at BU. She had two interviewers, one in political science and she asked my daughter about politics and healthcare, both were topics my daughter was very interested in, and her second interviewer was a biochemist whose research was very close to my daughter’s research and they spent most of the time discussing my daughter’s research. It goes to show that, maybe, the process is a reflection of whether you are the right fit for the program. If you are, you meet like-minded interviewers and you feel you have been luck. Does your daughter have other options, besides good UG schools? After reading your post, I personally think that it was rather unfair for AMC to still continue to interview so many other candidates when the first batch of 15 students for each of the three programs has already been sent out. But then again, if my son had been invited for the interview and even with that information, I would still encourage him to go to the interview.

@IMGDAD
Maybe I’m naive (I’d like to think practical), but I really think there are always options. I’d like to think that my daughter, like many if not all of the students on this forum (and I wish the same for everyone in the world but that would really be naive) would have a supportive family, good work ethics, really all the opportunities in the world ahead. If “direct” medical school is not possible now, try again in 4 years. If not accepted in 4 years, go do something else - work, get a masters, try again in a year. Even if never possible, there are multiple ways to contribute to health care. If this is truly what she wants, a way will be found. Interacting with the folks on this forum and meeting some of the young people during the visits, I must say I feel good about the future of healthcare!

@Midhelper
Thanks and sorry we didn’t introduce ourselves but I had to run around quite a bit for my own stuff so wasn’t there much - from that you can probably figure out which parent I was! Best of luck to your son - sounds like he did fine!

@slcmom, I second you - I’m very fortunate to have a supporting family. I applied to the direct bs/md programs knowing that it is possible that I might not get into one ( I was selective also) - I wanted an overall good experience. I am mentally prepared to take the traditional route. I am aware that route is also going to be challenging; at the end of this process I want to enjoy my college experience and I will able to take charge and enjoy my career; whatever it maybe

@med007
Nicely said! All the best and I’m sure you’ll do great wherever you go.

Kudos to med007 for being an appreciative child. So nice to hear you give some credit to your family. :)

@Midhelper, did you mean “So nice to hear some of you give credit to your family” rather than “So nice to hear you give some credit to your family” (Hahaha, just trying to play with word positioning!)

@IMGDAD haha but I purposefully put the “some” in front of the word credit because the student deserves a huge chunk of the credit and only “some” should be given to the family. If the family is getting all the credit it may not be fair to the student. If the family deserves all the credit - well then I don’t want to share what I think of that student then. LOL.

@IMGDAD and @Midhelper
Thanks for the laugh!

OK Now I remember who you are @SLCMom I think you seem like a real fun person to hang out with. I looked for you in the cafeteria - looked like you were going that way but disappeared. You definitely seem like supportive parents, hopefully your D is giving you credit/some credit !!! Good Luck to her by the way!

@Midhelper
Thanks! Yeah…button popped off my blouse…office emailed a bunch of urgent nonsense…airline texted flight delay…none of it serious but all just needing some time to deal with…plus I love an excuse to get out of campus tours! Don’t worry, I am not shy about claiming credit with my daughter!

I think most people applying to these programs have very strong family support. How else would we get to interviews, pay the application fees, and have such strong applications? The running “joke” in my family is that my SAT score is my mom’s lol. So thanks and kudos to all you parents working so hard to ensure our success. We really appreciate it, whether or not we show it :)

@SLCMom and @Midhelper- It’s so cool that you saw each other!

Anyone get into Cincinnati DAP?
They came out today.

Yes and Shanny101 was there too! It really was a cool group starlight27!
It also helped that the AMC people were very friendly and I thought they were pretty organized especially since MMI’s were also going on that day.

Oh and life is too short - you should show those around you your appreciation as often as you can.

OK now we too have joined the rest of you in the waiting game. [-O< :-"

Well said @starlight27

Thank you SLCMom !!! Your RPI/Albany trip report was excellent. We were getting pretty desperate for some information for our son, who has only one combined interview invite (RPI/Albany program). We really appreciate your selflessness and generosity.
