BS/MD programs. Will I ever get in?

Hi everyone,
I am eager to get into a BS/MD program (Wayne State's MedStart, not Brown's or Northwestern's so the level of competition is not quite as high, and I'm in-state).
Right now I am volunteering at a local nursing home (nearest hospital is 45 mins. away and I don't have my license yet, so I can't volunteer there).
I will have 50+ hours (more like 100) but I am concerned that volunteering at a nursing home will not show the same dedication to medicine as volunteering at the hospital would.
I could try to volunteer there next summer, but I am really trying to go to Telluride (do you think that would do anything for my app? It's very prestigious and all, but not medically relevant)
I could also do research next summer at MSU (medically related of course).

What am I to do? I have the grades (4.0, full IB course load, well known high school) the leadership (VP Model UN, Student Government, Prez of Spanish Club) the other volunteer hours (70+ working in the community, not medically related) and I will have the ACTs, SATs, and letters of rec that I need. Now all I need is the medically related experience.

Please help!

Bump! 10char

bumping it for you because i would like to know HOW selective these programs are. like if anyone could give examples of who got in or what kind of stats and activities it takes. and of course, help out smart.cookie here

I think that from what you have described you are pretty in the range for BS/MD programs. But a good indicator would be to go on thier website and look up the stats of ppl who were previously admitted to the program. From your states though I would tell you NOT to go the BS/MD route really. You can go to A MUCH BETTER school than wayne state and a much better medical school. Don't sweat it, I assume you are asian bc well you know, don't worry you can get into a medical school just work in college and explore, one day you may feel like you don't want to go to medical school. I should know i wanted to be a doctor since I was young and then changed my mind.

^ Thanks for the advice! I'm going to apply to some of the Ivies, UMich (as a safety), and a couple of BS/MD programs. If I make it at any of the Ivies, I'm going!
