Chance my for lower BS/MD programs

Hi,

I'm very interested in a BS/MD program but I'm not sure I have enough medical related ECs to pull it off. I do have high academics, so I am hoping to apply to some of the less desirable BS/MD programs so that they may overlook my less than stellar medical achievements. I would appreciate chances!

My stats:

Junior this year at a Newsweek top 20 school, USNWR top 10 school.
GPA: 4.0
ACT: 33 (retaking with hopes of a 34)
SAT IIs: Taking them in Math II, Bio, and Literature

Class difficulty:
9th and 10th: All honors courses, all considered "pre-IB". I took AP Calc AB in 10th grade, received a 5.

11th: Full IB course load. 3 sciences: IB Bio, Chem and Physics. IB SL Math, IB Lit, IB History, IB Spanish, and TOK

12th: Courses will stay the same.

ECs (my weakest part for BS/MD):
MUN club president, many awards in MUN
Spanish Honors Society
NHS
Youth Symphony (next year is my 5th year, I'm the principle horn player)
Volunteer Work
Will be attending TASP this summer (Telluride Association Summer Program for Juniors)
100ish hours of volunteering at nursing home
Youth Leadership Project: Investigated problems in medical care in the neighborhood, interacted with physicians for their perceptions of the American system of medicine.

Note that I don't have hospital volunteering or research :(
I will be shadowing a doc next fall, so that will go on my apps, but that is about the extent of my medical involvement.

Chance me for:

Wayne State MedStart
Howard BS/MD
St. Bonaventure/GWU program
MSU BS/DO
Brooklyn College/SUNY Downstate BS/MD

State of residency is Michigan, if it helps. Chance me and I'll chance back!

Oh, and if it’s helpful:

Science Olympiad Coordinator
Student Gov. Secretary

Award in the Sciences (academic honor given out by school to 1 student)
100 volunteer hours in other, non-medical areas

Get in as much shadowing as you can & write really great essays about your experiences.

Thanks. Any other thoughts?

Hey, if you are in Michigan, apply to U of Toledo - has 2 programs, one with Biology major and another is Biomedical Engineering major in UG portion, and NO MCAT!

Are you currently enrolled in the U Toledo program? If so, would you mind sharing your stats?

My D. has been accepted, but has chosen to get enrolled in different bs/md. It was 2 years ago. We went to information session in Engineering dept. at UT and I was impressed by the program.

Anyone else want to chance me?

Ummm not to put down anyone but U of Toledo is really not a good school if you even want to become an MD
I think you have a chance at MSU DO program, I have actually talked to the admissions director also the application does not require medical research. Its a good school too for primary care
MedStart is hard to get into, it really depends on who else applies that year. There have been students that could attend Michigan and other good schools (non-ivies because I believe they would already go to ivies over MedStart). but I totally believe you have a shot at it. althought I think they look at research
as for other school I really don’t know but since you are going to be out of state, there will be a lot of people in state (especially SUNY) that are also applying

So you think MSU might overlook my less than stellar medical ECs in favor of my academics. I do have the opportunity to shadow a DO. Do you think that would make me pretty competitive at the MSU BS/DO program?

Thanks everyone for the chances. This will help me plan my applications for this summer.

“Ummm not to put down anyone but U of Toledo is really not a good school if you even want to become an MD”

How is it so? I personally know someone who got Mayo Clinic (#1 in a world) residency after Toledo. Apparently, that was such a bid deal that her husband even quit his very good job to move to Minnesota with her. In addition, there are NO bad American Medical Schools. I am not clear where you got your information.

Could I get a few more chances? Thanks.

Academically, u seem ok, but make sure to do amazing on ur PSAT to be a national merit finalist, and make sure your SAT score is relatively close or higher than ur PSAT - a criteria to go from semifinalist to finalist.

u definitely need more medical experience, just plain shadowing wont be enough - consider a medical 1 or 2 week residential summer camp. For instance, Johns Hopkins National Honors Convocation on Medicine or the “So you want to be a doctor” course at Summer@Brown

I would also recommend the subject test in chemistry - almost every bs/md applicant who i interviewed with had taken it

Furthermore, u should also look into neocuom, Drexel, and U. Miami for easier B.S./M.D. programs
