BS/MD programs

I've heard a lot about 6 or 7 year programs in premed/grad, but I just finished junior year of highschool and don't know much. What is the value in these programs? When, if ever, are you locked into the medical field? And, do you major in a field like Biology and possibly minor in something like Music Performance, or is that not part of the program?

Thanks for all the information! It's all a great help.

these programs are very valuable because you get out of med school 2 years earlier, save money, and they prepare you very well. the downside is they can be intense. you are basically locked into the medical field unless you drop out of the program and do undergrad at whichever school you are at. most of them you major in a science, some you can minor in a humanities.. it depends on the program. but for most you can still take classes in the humanities. check out the multiple degree thread under premed.. it basically answers most of your questions.

Thank you so much. I will take a look at that thread . . . guess I just didn't know where to look. Directions much appreciated :)

I usually don't respond to threads re: BS/MD programs cause my kids aren't going that route. But I do know about U. of Rochester (as my d applied their and we liked the campus very much) and I believe they have that program. They also have a nice flexible curriculum so if you have varied interests such as pre-med and music, it may be the type of school that will allow you to explore those interests. I also know that they are affiliated with Eastman School of Music- so based on your desires, it may be a good place to look at. I do not know if JHU has combined BS/MD program but they too are affiliated with a Music School ( I think). I am sure more knowledgeable people can give you more info- but I did want to pass along some info. Good luck.

Hi again. I just checked out the Rochester website. Their program is called REMS- it doesn't appear to be an accelerated program- but it does guarantee admission into their Medical School (no MCAT's required). They actually use as a selling point to the program that you can take music courses at Eastman--so it looks like a program you should check out.

Thanks, mamy1. You're right about JHU, which is associated with the Peabody institution, as my friend's older sister is attending.
