Just wondering if anyone knows first hand of East Coast BS that have Learning Specialist on staff and accept kids learning differences. While my child doesn't have a LD, she does have mild learning issues that need some accommodations (like extra time). Since the new admission season is right around the corner, I'd appreciate this info. Btw we are looking for an artsy, casual school that is not a pressure cooker but still good academics. Her school gave me these names: Putney, Emma Willard, Marvelwood, Oakwood Friends, Purnell to look into. I personally like George School and NMH but the HS advisor thought it may be too hard.

What are your thoughts on these schools? Any other recs?

I suspect that needing extra time is not outside the norm at any boarding school. My DD is at St. Paul’s and there were early start times for all of the finals for the kids who needed extra time. There are also “learning resource” people on staff.

Eagle Hill and Forman, both in CT are both geared towards kids with LDs (but these schools may be more focused on LDs than what your child needs); I’ve heard some good things about Storm King in NY too. Try posting this question also in the LD forum. Good luck – I learned too late about these schools, but am considering them for perhaps a PG year before college.

I would agree with the above posters and add Proctor and Cushing to your list.

My daughter will be attending NHS in the fall so if you keep in touch I can tell you how it’s going. She has relatively pronounced dyslexia and we wanted her to have not only accommodations (like extra time) but also support (i.e., a fully staffed learning center). For this reason we chose NHS over George.

I don’t know how much extra help your daughter needs but this might be an important distinction for you. Putney does not have a learning center, btw.

In my experience, I also suggest being careful about some of the schools which provide accommodations for LD, b/c some are also set up for providing more emotional types of support, which is a whole different ball of wax.

D2 is entering George School as a junior in the fall. They do have a learning specialist on staff and accommodate differences, but have a pretty rigorous curriculum. I guess we’ll know more once she gets there.

You should look at Solebury. They have a program for kids with LD’s and are definitely artsy and casual!

From what I have heard about Purnell, virtually all of their students have learning differences or other challenges. From your description, may not be what you are looking for.
