B's

Hey there, I know there are other threads out there concerning B's, but they're not as specific as I'd like.

So my question is, what would you say a general limit of B's is to get into a top school like with HYPS, or ones like jhu, nu, georgetown...

One? More than one? Of course a perfect 4.0 is preferrable, but how many B's would pretty much ruin any chance of getting in?

Thanks

depends on how many classes you have. Basically 1 B per semester might be minimum.

One B per semester in every year of high school?=8 B's?

College admissions depends on too many other factors. I know someone who got into an Ivy with straight Bs junior year. Your ECs, essays, test scores, and recommendations (and socio-economic status) can do a lot to offset GPA.

Just try to get as few Bs as possible, and if you have a high B and have a chance to turn it into an A, always go for it instead of thinking you can "afford" to have so many Bs without destroying your chances.

Thanks for that.
I'm just trying to figure out if I get any more B's in high school, if my chance at my choice schools (some listed above) are just shot.
Because I've already gotten a year worth of B's is one class.
=/

Basically, it dpeneds on which classes you have Bs in, are they honors or AP classes?

It's only Algebra I (I think honors, idk) but I'm wondering if I get even one more B in another high school class, if I don't have much of a good chance to get into my choice schools. (being ones like NU, WUSTL, Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie Mellon, and far reaches of Brown, Columbia, Cornell and Stanford). =]

Rank is more important than letter grades.

my rank sucks due to no honors weighting and Bs in PE. Does that matter?

How do you get a B in PE?

I'm pretty sure colleges don't care about gym, but if they do, just explain your situation of why you got a B (surgery).

yeah, like nick said, it was because of surgery and I was absent an ass load.

Just pretty retarded because my rank really suffered because of it...

I don't think colleges see semester grades. At least, my school doesn't send those out. They only see final letter grades. I had straight As freshman and sophomore year. This year, my junior year, I'm going to have 6 As, 2 B+s (AP Psychology and Honors Math Analysis), and 1 B (AP English Lang/Comp., grade cap at B+). So, really because of the intensity of the classes went up, my grades fell down. Don't worry about Bs and don't try to explain them in an essay or something. Just accept them unless you have a very special reason. And I'm sure that the reason why colleges have you take the SAT IIs is to check against your grades. And I think with the APs they do the same although they don't require them.

Most high schools give grades at semester, and the colleges the OP wants to attend require semester grades.

"How do you get a B in PE?"

Um, I got a D in PE last quater.
Haha, because I didn't dress out 7 times.

My school gives a grade each quarter (two a semester), but to get your overall grade it's 40% first quarter, 40% second quarter, 20% mid-term or final exam.
But it's all averaged out into your gpa, and that's what I'm wondering about. Yeah =]

colleges dont factor in your PE grade so it won't hurt your GPA, but it does hurt your rank

Lets see..i got 7 b's freshman year...6 sophmore year...5 Junior year..: P adn i still got into U michigan and a few other top 50 schools! Really balance the gpa out with a sat/exc/essays. I like to compare college admissions with a person's face. If you have a pimple on your forehead, make everything else on your face look as nice as possible so the overall apperance is okay rather than just focusing on the pimple.

Haha thanks, the pimple analogy really helped too.

the grade inflation i'm seeing here is ridiculous
everyone is talking about getting straight 4.0s
all over the place i see
"i got a A in the class but the teacher sucked and i failed the AP"
a bunch of kids with 4.0s and crappy test scores
damnit
if i went to a superinflated school, i'd be going to HYPS...but nope i'm far short of any of that coz i go to a real school

ok ok fine it's my own fault for flunking school
