BU CGS or UMass

I really wanted to get into Sargent College at BU, but I was accepted into CGS. I am not pleased with the CGS curriculum, it’s like 2 more years of high school. Also, for my major, human physiology, I’d have to take at least 2 summer courses every year just to graduate if I went. I don’t think it’s worth it.

I’m not sure if I should go to UMass for a year or two then transfer, or just stick it out in CGS. Thoughts?

you’d still have to take liberal arts classes if you were in Sargent, so basically CGS would be fulfilling those requirements. CGS isn’t necessarily like 2 more years of hs.

I’d really look at the summer courses to make this decision. That’s a lot of extra work. Is that with the new CGS curriculum?

Personally, I don’t like CGS because of the curriculum. I would not pay $50,000 to go to high school for 2 more years. If I was in your shoes and I really wanted to go to BU, I would go to UMass for a year and reapply as a transfer.

If money is not an issue, then go to BU. The cost difference is huge.

I wouldn’t make plans based on your current feelings. CGS is a large, successful program and lots of people like it a lot. I don’t know what UMass has in your area of interest. But you should go to either school wanting to like it or you’ll just be making yourself miserable.

For me, the money isn’t an issue, but I want to study what I want, not all these CGS classes

But again, you’re not going to have total autonomy no matter where you end up. Unless the UMass curriculum is different. But at BU if you’re in Sargent there are still requirement classes (aka liberal arts classes, the same ones you take in CGS). The only difference is your social science/humanities/nat sci/writing stuff is all rolled into certain classes instead of you picking a random history course, a random philosophy course etc. This should definitely be important to you, but keep in mind that you wouldn’t have entirely free reign over your schedule even if you weren’t in CGS.

You can’t study what you want in the first two years at many schools and some have it all scripted for you. Look at the CGS program and see if it fits what you want.
