Throughout highschool I’ve played 4 years lacrosse and hockey. Have 100+ hours of community service and have worked a part time job the past two years 30 hours per week.
Strong letters of recommendation from principles various teachers who have been officers in the military. SAT is a 1700 out of 2400. Plan on applying to CAS. What are my chances? How can I improve?

Retake the SAT 1700 probably won’t cut it… also possibly try the ACT.

I agree with Viking Boy11. Definitely retake the SATs and/or try the ACT. Consider taking SAT tutoring classes to bring up your scores. My son’s scores went up by 200 points. BU super scores SATs. Thus, they will utilize your best scores of your attempts. Do you know what you plan to study in CAS? Why do you like BU so much? BU wants to know why BU is your top score. Be specific when you answer this question and say more than “I want to go to BU because it’s in Boston and I love Boston.” I’m not sure where you are from but show interest in the school, visit the school as much as you can- take the 2 hour tour, look into taking a tour with a student who is studying in your intended major. Push yourself to take the most challenging classes but make sure that you need to make sure that you get good grades. Have you done anything different or special like extensive travelling, research, mission work or been involved in a project that has greatly impacted you? Have you had to overcome an obstacle that has impacted you? BU is really interested in having students from various backgrounds and you need to let them know who you are and what your goals are when you write your supplemental essay.

Finally, would you consider attending the College of General Studies for BU and then transferring to the school of your choice at BU. I have known many people who have been in the College of General Studies (CGS) and have been very successful when they have completed the program and transitioned to another.

I’m interested in a biology degree from CAS and Boston University because of the highly ranked program and I have been watching the hockey games here since I was a child it’s a tradition to route for BU and the beanpot and just the excellent atmosphere and diversity the school offers, I realize I’m a little under par for this school but is there anything I can do in my senior year? I’ve recently dealt with a concussion that’s lasted me over a year and throwing up almost everyday making me feel terrible and having to drop my AP courses but making it so I ended up with straight A’s for the year.

A 3.6 unweighted GPA is not a bad GPA. When you write your supplemental, you should mention that you were recovering from a concussion and the fact that you managed to keep your grades up is important. It sounds as though you are local in that you attend beanpot games. Did a family member of yours attend BU? BU does consider legacy as part of its decision to accept students.

As I stated before, I would concentrate on bringing your SATs up and if you are local, to take advantage of the various tour options that BU offers. You could probably call admissions or speak to somebody in CAS regarding your credentials and what they feel your chances are.

BU looks at difficulty of curriculum and wants to see you taking the most challenging courses your school offers. Any chance for some honors or APs in there this last year? Also check your spelling. The homonyms can be a trap. Use shorter sentences.

Junior year I took one AP and did well until the sickness. Senior year the only AP’s available are statistics and history but this would make me have to drop the physics course because of a scheduling issue. Considering a PG year… First generation college student and I’ve attended several bean bots

Either a PG year or just attending my states flagship Umass Amerst as it’s compared to BU in many different areas just cheaper in cost. Also looking at quinnipiac and umass dartmouth, overall BU would be my dream

But then I have the option since I went to a vocational school for electrical and took tons of electrical theory and math classes apply to BU’s electrical engineering program

If BU is your top choice, be sure you check that you are willing to be considered for CGS if not accepted into Engineering (or is it CAS you want?) I was at a BU evening program about the admissions process a couple months ago. There was a sample application similar to yours. The student was not accepted but would have been had she checked CGS. You can still graduate in ENG or CAS if you start in CGS.

It’s great you’ve been to the Beanpot and are enthusiastic about BU, but going to the Beanpot is not a measure of academic ability so it won’t count for all that much. Be sure to mention things about BU that appeal to you academically as well when you prepare your application.

My overall goal would be to attend dental school after BU. would CGS these first two years allow me to study abroad, do research, or even double major? Would I be able to do a masters in 5 years still? Is this a strong program or would i be better off attend umass amherst?

Also currently going into my senior year with a 3.65 unweighted gpa. 1900 on sats. Will have taken 5 AP classes by the time I graduate and mostly other honors. Involved in a good deal of extracurriculars; student council, NHS, spanish club, JSU, field hockey. What are my chances?

and do you think I should take the acts?

It never hurts to take the ACTs. My son did much better, percentile-wise on the ACTs than the SATs. I think he got a 34 ACT and something like 2070 SAT.

Can’t answer your question on the double major, etc. and CGS. Maybe someone else can, Lnunes96. Obviously apply to both BU and UMass. They’re both good schools. Hopefully you’ll get to decide.

Devvxorrushh. Your academics and extra curriculars look good. I would say that you have a good chance. What school are you interested in applying? Some of the colleges are very competitive to get into. Also, make sure you do a great job on your essays and definitely demonstrate interest in BU by taking part in various visiting options and programs that BU offers. You can take the ACTs and re-take the SATs, BU super scores.

CGS is an excellent program…There are several recent threads that would give you a better idea. DD went abroad as a freshman, and overloaded every semester so that she could both graduate early and go to England a second time for a semester. My only concern is the science aspect. I would call CGS and talk to one of the science professors about your goals. CGS loves students who are passionate, especially if they have overcome an unusual challenge. It’s an interesting group of people, the classes are much smaller and are excellent. After observing DD’s program and progress, I think she learned much much more than if she had done CAS for her first 2 years. Ps, in your research, look at what they are doing with bees…fascinating!
