Chances?

I go to a pretty competative high school (in MA). My GPA is really bad though. Unweighted its about a 2.8 and weighted its like a 3.0. I had a strong aversion to homework

My grades:

Freshman year (2.96 W):

English 9 Honors: 80
Spanish II: 84
World History: 87
Algebra I Honors: 78
Physical Science: 79
Gym: 95
Health: 85
Engineering: 89
Computer Skills: 86

Softmore Year (3.12 W):

English 10: 85
Biology: 84
World History Honors: 86
Geometry: 80
Spanish III: 80
Engineering II: 92
Web Page Design: 88
Gym: 95

Junior Year (forget my exact GPA):

English 10: 89
US History Honors: 89
Chemistry: 80
Psychology AP: 75
Algebra II: 70
Spanish IV: 86
Business Law: 89
Gym: 95

Senior Year I plan on straight A’s term 1! (I’ve signed up for 1 AP, 2 honors classes)

However I did pretty well on the SAT, with a 2000 out of 2400. SAT II’s are 740 in World History, 740 in US History, 640 in Literature.

I have good extra curriculars (peer counselor, state finalist for speech and debate team, model UN, various jobs, wrestling team, ski club, cross country team).

I’m probably going to major in international relations. I am a decent writer as well so my essay should hopefuly be decent. I will have a recommendation from my English teacher and my History Honors teacher.

As long as you dont need aid, you should be fine. Apply early (EDI or EDII) to help your chances.

You think early would help me? I thought that would put me with more competative people?

Actually I have two points:

1) BU admissions is need blind, meaning the admissions staff does not know your financial situation when they decide to admit you.

2)Early decision has the same acceptance rate as early decision. It really is for people that KNOW they want to come here. It won't help OR hurt your chances.

I call BS on both. Especially in my case.

BU is probably a reach for you.
I know people with GPAs way above 4, and multiple AP classes, that have been rejected, and your SAT scores aren't anything so special that they make up for your low GPA. Like I said on the Northeastern thread I'm only guessing based on numbers, and not everything else your application may show that you can't convey here.

In all honesty, your grades are not high enough and they don't show enough of a strong upward curve to compensate. It's a reach.

Yeah, you're beat..

Sorry for the harshness but I hold a bit of resentment towards those who think they don't need to put any work into their schoolwork. This kid in our graduating class applied to BU and was pretty much in your exact same situation. Out of the seven people who applied to BU from my school he was the only one not admitted even though he talked so much crap the whole year about it cause he had a decent SAT...

Good luck?

I think that BU will be a reach for you based on your GPA. Your SAT scores are good but not so good they will make up for your GPA.

Try to get over your 'aversion' to homework. The more you practice (for most subjects), the better you get.

Maybe you should also consider re-taking the SATs - prepare well and your score could go up.

Work hard, and apply anyway.

All the best.

loslobos:

Those are based on statistics and facts. Not just some line that BU likes to give. The acceptence rate is about 40% for both.

DJglover, that wasn't appropriate. Just because you didn't like a kid from your school, you shouldn't be mean to someone you don't know on a BU forum.

This kid has been putting in more effort and his grades are going up. Good for him.
