@ MassDaD68 Thanks! I thought you were talking about firstgen2021 . :-*
I received a very generous financial aid award. I got the Richard D. Cohen scholarship for $52,100 and combined with three other smaller grants, I got $61,570. In addition, I got $2,000 of work study. I am very grateful and I did not know that my award was pretty rare for BU. I hope you guys are able to appeal for more aid, I truly hope the best for you all.
I got more than full tuition including room and board and all that. I got the Richard D. Cohen scholarship combined with other things to make $68,220. I’m pretty sure that covers everything and more.
My FAFSA indicated my EFC as 0 though so maybe that’s why. I was really shocked to get a full ride after hearing everything about BU’s financial aid.
congratulations!
@hazeydays For students they really want, BU will do its best to make it affordable.
@forevernymph Could u tell us a little about your other credits or strong parts?
How much should we prepare for Room plus food for my undergraduate son? Somebody said $14,000/ year and another said $25,000/year. Thanks!
The link below has all the information for the 2017/2018 school year for incoming freshman.
Room is $10,080
Dining plans $5,190
Total room and board $15,270
BU offered me $40,000 a year. It’s $5,500 in loans and $34,500 in grants. Which means the school is still about 30K. Congrats to all of you who got good packages, but it’s not typical. FAFSA estimated my EFC at 14K and NEU and GWU, both CSS schools, estimated around 22K. I can’t afford what BU wants.
But not nearly as bad as NYU! They told me to take out 44K a year in parent plus loans and 7K a year in federal loans. BU was disappointing, NYU was downright offensive.
@KaitElaine BU is also a CSS School did you have your CSS profile sent to them? If BU is your no 1 school and you would attend if you had more aid you could file an appeal with them. The information for appealing a grant award is on the BU website. They need to receive it by April 15’
@KaitElaine I second that. If it is your top school then appeal it. The initial offer shows that they would like to have you as a student. Best of luck whatever you decide!
I think the award was very very generous. If you can afford it then go and do not appeal.
If you can’t afford and are considering turning them down, then appeal and make your case.
I paid pretty much full price to go there many years ago, and I feel it was worth it.
I loved it and it prepared me well for my career. I all I got were federally subsidized loans,
no grants at all ( I was a transfer student and they usually don’t get much).
For merit, many schools at this level max out around $20k and anything beyond that is strictly based
on need. You have to demonstrate the need to get more.
Thanks for the advice. I’m in a bit of a sticky situation with CSS schools because my parents are divorced and my dad has some complicated financial problems that cannot be explained with the CSS. My other top school gave me an amazing package so I’ll just stick with that.
And our financial aid appeal was just rejected. McGill it is! (Frankly, as his Dad I can honestly say I think it is the best fit for my S.)
Best of luck to all!
I got $59,520 total, which I’m super thankful for, with the Richard D. Cohen Scholarship, Charles River Grant, and then the federal grants, and no loans. My EFC was 0. I didn’t get work study which I wanted, would I still be able to work on campus and pay towards the rest of the expenses? Also, what would every one suggest for the rest of tuition? I’m a first generation student, and my mom and I have NO idea how loans and stuff work. How do we decide how to pay for the rest? We were on campus and met with financial aid asvisors for a short meeting, but they didn’t give us any information on loans and stuff. I know I can’t expect anyone to know exactly what to do, lol, but any advice from people who know how it works would be great! Also, does anyone know how many people get the Richard D. Cohen Scholarship or how they choose recipients? I’m just curious.
@EagleEyeG Everyone is entitled to a federal loan of up to $5500 and with a 0 EFC about half of that would be subsidized. Call FA.
@EagleEyeG The way you will pay for the remainder is either by working or borrowing. With a “0” EFC it is surprising they didn’t give you CWS and you can appeal and request an award. If they say no, you can find a non work-study job. You will also be offered subsidized and unsubsidized student loans.
Finally, your mother can borrow through the PLUS loan program but I’d try to exhaust all other options first. I’d contact BU again. They can and should advise you on loans etc.
@EagleEyeG Your EFC on the FAFSA may have been 0 but BU uses the Profile to determine need. I read an article or link to BU site that they add back in your parents deferred income (401k contributions) and consider equity in homes. You should call fin aid and find out what loans are available to you and your mother. Your are about 12k out of pocket for your first year.
Hi!
If I received a scholarship, work study, and federal grant combined to the amount of 70,320 (scholarship is 59900), does this mean I have a full tuition or a full ride each year? Or is it a set amount? Or do I still pay?
BU also didn’t give me any BU grant though maybe because I applied regular decision and their funds ran out? I also know they don’t meet financial need and the need-based grant they do give out is also based on grades and need (my GPA is a 3.8 and my old SAT is 2010 which is pretty low so maybe thats why).
BU also didn’t give me loans. I’m really happy about the financial aid package but so confused; I feel as though they didn’t finish my financial aid package because I should have loans since other colleges also gave me loans; I have an efc of 0. Is this worth calling the financial aid office? I guess they think I can pay for the rest of the school year? What do you all think?
