Hi! I’m a senior applying to BU this year as a Theatre Arts major. I know BU doesn’t have a specific musical theatre program, but I recently read about an MT concentration being started. Does anyone know anything about what exactly this means, and how legit it is? Also, if it’s not really legit, does BU regularly have other MT-related opportunities? Like, do they ever do musicals, or have student-run musical theatre groups/clubs? Or is it just straight theatre?
its basically a set of classes that you take to get the concentration. The head of the acting program has a bfa in musical theatre from ithaca, so she knows a lot. They do musicals, mostly ones you haven’t heard of, and I’m not sure about clubs. Hope this helps!
I can speak to the non-CFA/general musical-ness at BU. BU Stage Troupe does a musical every year for Parent’s Weekend + BU On Broadway does shows every year as well. When I was there, I saw Once Upon a Mattress, Fame, How to Succeed, Rocky Horror, Into the Woods, and Batboy the Musical. Google tells me Stage Troupe recently did Seussical the Musical, and BU On Broadway is doing Follies and The Wedding Singer. Hopefully students who attended more recently than I did can tell you others, but I don’t think the culture has changed much. There is definitely a very active group of musical lovers on campus and they do shows every year, and now that CFA has the MT concentration, you can bet they’re doing shows, too. (whereas Stage Troupe & BU OB are independent from CFA)
