BU SMED or VCU GMED

Can you please weigh in your opinions on the BU SMED and VCU GMED. D got into these two programs. How are the two environments, academically and socially for both UG and Med School? safety? rigor of the program? stress? preparedness for med school? student happiness etc...
Which one would you pick of the two and why?

I think BU SMED is a better option as it offers undoubtedly better research opportunities than VCU and 7-year program saves a year worth of money. I am inclined to believe it is a bit stressful in part being a 3-year undergrad and deflation in gpa. Student happiness should not be an issue as SMED students work together in a cooperative environment.

A current SMED student can offer a better perspective on preparedness for med school.

I heard that the environment at VCU is slightly more competitive than other BS/MD programs. Most BS/MD programs guarantee you a spot in medical school without having to take the MCAT and if you register to take the MCAT and apply out to other medical schools, you relinquish your seat in medical school. I heard that at VCU, you can choose to take the MCAT and apply to other medical schools while still holding onto your guaranteed spot. This creates a little bit of competition among students as some of them are using VCU as a “backup” while still trying to gain acceptance into top tier medical schools.

This is what I heard from someone who was accepted to VCU but decided not go for this reason. I hope this helps!

I would choose VCU GMED, but I am biased as I am a current freshman in the program. So far, I have not felt any disadvantage in attending a “low-tier” undergraduate institution. There are plenty of research opportunities, both in science-related and non-science disciplines. In addition, MCV is just a free bus ride away, which opens plenty of opportunities for shadowing and volunteering. Honestly, my time here has convinced me that it really is up to the individual to make the most of the opportunities surrounding him—they are there, you just have to take initiative. As for the idea of a 7 year v. 8 year program, I personally did not want to rush my undergraduate studies. It really is a personal choice.

As for the ability to take the MCAT and apply out, I find that to be one of the major features which distinguish this program from several of the rest. Of course there will be some competition, but that will be present naturally where pre-meds of any sort are involved. In my year, students get along very well and don’t try to sabotage each other. I honestly don’t think the environment here is any more competitive than in other BS/MD programs.

In terms of safety, Richmond is a city and crime is not a foreign occurrence. But a little caution and common sense will go a long way. I don’'t fear for my life when I walk outside, but I make it a point not be out and about alone in the middle of the night. In terms of stress and rigor of the program, I don’t find myself to be overly stressed. As a freshman, I haven’t experienced the GMED courses yet, but the classes I have taken are sufficiently challenging. Again from by observations, students in my year (and even above) seem to be happy.

Finally, VCU School of Medicine is building rapidly, with a new building and a new and improved curriculum. From doctors and other professionals I have spoken to, it is a great school that will provide you with a solid medical education and will not limit you in any way when you apply for residencies.

With that said, I don’t know much about the BU program so I can’t help much in comparing the two. Don’t forget to consider your financial aid/scholarships from both schools. I can say that I am totally happy with my choice to attend this BS/MD program, as a soon-to-be sophomore! If you have any more questions, feel free to send me a message!

Manu101: I looked at your older posts. How do you look back at your decision of selecting VCU gmed over Stony brook and tcnj/njms. I am in the same boat and need to make a decision really quick. How do I contact you??
