VCU GMED vs UMKC BAMD

Guys,

VCU GMED vs UMKC BAMD -- Need your input, help, thoughts:

VCU

4+4 Program: I can pick my major and do pre-med rqmts.
GPA: maintain min 3.5 & Complete Honors program
MCAT: 26 (at current scale, will change after MCAT 2015, but should be equivalent)
Status: Out-of-state
Scholarship: Good $$ covers most fees.
Pros: Flexibility in undergrad, summers off, honors program, well ranked med school. Possibility to get in competitive residencies.
Cons: Not sure?? (MCAT may be, even-though low scores still have to spend time preparing)

UMKC

2+4 Program
GPA: Not specified (anyone?)
MCAT: No
Status: Out-of-state
Scholarship: $0.00 !!
Pros: No-MCAT, 6 yrs (finish early, invest years saved into fellowship)
Cons: Fast paced (18-24 credits per sem), No summers off, Med school ranking, being too young med graduate for competitive residencies. Out-of-state fees + no scholarship $.

VCU and UMKC med school fees are about same for out of state. So the major difference is in undergrad. fees. Believe dorm is about same both places.

Many factors to consider, appreciate your input.

Thanks in advance!

Not necessary for me to go into great detail, but you hit on the major points. Between only these 2 choices, VCU is definitely the way to go. I think your numbers are a little off though.

VCU out-of-state: (29,473.14 x 4) + (46,867 x 4) = $117,892.56 for tuition & fees only
UMKC out-of-state: (39,166) + (48,950) + (60,124 x 4) = $328,612 for tuition and fees only

That’s nearly 3 times the cost for UMKC vs. VCU.

For VCU:
Undergrad - <a href=“Cost & aid - Admissions - Virginia Commonwealth University”>Admissions & Aid - Virginia Commonwealth University;
Med school -<a href=“Supporting Our Students VCU School of Medicine”>Supporting Our Students VCU School of Medicine;

For UMKC:
http://med.umkc.edu/bamd/finance/</a></p>

The VCU total number above doesn’t even take into account that you got a scholarship, I don’t know how much, so it’s even lower than the figure above.

VCU also has home residencies in the competitive specialties - http://www.medschool.vcu.edu/departments/#clinical</a> that UMKC just doesn’t have.

^ You missed something while calculating VCU fees. It will be:
(29473.14 * 4) + (46867 * 4) = $305,360.56

@yesdee, thanks for that!!! Feel like a klutz on that calculation. Should know to double check my work. Thank you.

I guess all the more reason to choose VCU, since cost is relatively the same and has more competitive residencies to offer in which one can do research while on campus. I’m curious whether it’s possible to apply out to other medical schools while being in the VCU program.

@titan1, which school did you end up choosing?
