BU vs. Northeastern (Journalism)

Hi, I'm a senior and future journo major/econ minor. I'm thinking of applying to either BU or Northeastern (not both), but I'm less enamored with BU than I was a few months ago. The admissions rep I spoke to said BU emphasizes a traditional liberal arts education.

In other words, as a journo major, I wouldn't be able to take a journo class until my junior year. Science and math are not my strong points, and I'd rather take more classes that pertain to my interests/desired career and won't kill my GPA. I want to be as employable as possible and have two internships under my belt by the time I graduate.

In this regard, does Northeastern have the same policy as BU? Also, I've heard fabulous things about Northeastern's co-op program, especially in comparison to BU's. Should I still visit both schools?

Thanks!

Definitely visit both schools and talk to journalism students and faculty if at all possible.

Thank you! Do you know if Northeastern requires two years of “core” courses before enrolling in journo courses? I’ve had trouble finding information online.

You could just call and ask Northeastern if you can’t find that information online. Or email them. Another thought, if you’re looking at Boston schools: isn’t Emerson supposed to be amazing for journalism?

one thing you can look at is the school catalog that lists graduation requirements for each major (and it looks like core classes are required for journalism majors)

http://www.northeastern.edu/registrar/courses/welcome1314.html#sec

Northeastern will provide the ability to co-op at the Boston Globe, Herald and other local news papers and even T.V. stations (networks).

I agree that you should visit each campus. You may find that you like one campus more than the other. Both are basically in the heart of the city, but Northeastern has more of a campus feel while BU has more of a city feel (think NYU or GWU).
