Budget cuts affecting EC'S?

Well it's a tough time for everyone isn't it? My school's no exception in the new economic situation. Thanks to budget issues, the EC's offered at my school have been pretty much dwindled down to a only major clubs (i.e. Student council, NHS, Key Club)
All the smaller, more 'specific' clubs that can honestly 'define' a student have all been cut. Even our athletics department has been forced to cut down. Now, all major (NOT smaller sports like tennis or bowling, they got $5 in yearly funding from the start) have been forced to reduce their solid gold bats and hockey sticks to silver ones.
At a NJ Guido HS where only the 'cool' and 'hot' people win stuff like class elections, it's become really hard for non-athletic Asians like me to gain a few leadership positions in clubs or even have any clubs.

With the budget looking bad for several years to come, what can I do keep a competitive edge in my EC's? Thanks guys.

Bump…

Anyone with any advice?

That’s a really tough situation. A town near my own caused quite an uproar when it shut down its whole athletic department. Really sucks for the athletes, etc.

First off, you should still maybe TRY to run in an election, get creative with it and maybe pull off the upset? I don’t know the status quo at your school, but maybe you could pull it off. It goes without saying, but this should also motivate you to absolutely nail all the things OUTSIDE of EC’s, showing that you’ve done everything in your power to stand out. GPA, SATS, etc.

Plus, there’s always stuff outside of school that you can get involved in. This just forces you to get a little bit more creative.

I’m not totally sure, but colleges are smart. They may know about your school, know about the EC climate (or lack thereof) and maybe “understand your situation.” Who knows?

Good luck, man :)

Thanks, and when I said a guido infested NJ school that only supports cool hot people, I spoke of experience. I tried running for treasurer but lost miserably when this pretty attractive and social girl ran. She didn’t promise to do anything, post a single poster up, she honestly just said vote for me. I bought up serious issues and thought of numerous ways to tackle them. But I don’t have a hot body or tons (she knew every other person in HS in middle school) of friends to spread the word.
Hopefully a guidance counselor letter of rec. may clear things up. I read about a few others who were able to do so as well… who knows, new board of ed who may for once cut the (crappy yet well regarded) athletic program and fund some clubs for once.

My school district is cutting all sports next year, and elementary PE, music, and art.

Let’s see anyone’s district do worse than that.

True true. I doubt your school suffers from mine’s Idiotic/Intelligent decision makers ratio.

I guess they’ll be basing our admissions from more summer programs, GPA, SAT/ACTs, and Essays than ever.

our budget got rejected, for the second year in a row. & this year was critical, too. our town sucks…conservative, rich [yet, unwilling to help out the school], & filled with old people. now, the school has no choice but to fire 6 teachers, 9 other staff members, & probably cut some AP courses. but, if there is a god, they will cut the football team…most of their parents didn’t bother to vote…why should their kids get football?

Yeah as far as I have heard from some athlete friends, there have been little to no changes for our athletic department either. They still get new equipment every year, bus rides accross the state nearly every other day, and lavish wrestling or football dinners. I’m not saying cut it all out but they should cap out there spending you know

Town fired 9 teachers, 5 staff.

Athletics been reduced, EC’s cut down…

If the second budget doesnt pass, middle/high school language arts classes will be cut. Beat that.

Like I said, it’s tough times for everyone nowadays. I’m scimping to find something I can excel in. If only I could find a teacher who’d wanna run a club for free

You could always try to create a student run club based on your interests. That would be really stand out.
