Do any of you have grievances with your school or district based on their policies?
Mine is that our district weights ALL outside classes as 4.0s on a 5.0 scale because they claim it "helps level the playing field". Of course I find out after taking a class over the summer (I'm not saying taking the class was a bad idea, but I would've probably studied for a district test-out instead).

4 absences in one quarter means you fail all of your classes.

health class and a-g requirement for graduation

10% of my grade is based on “participation” which is three parts, (1) attendance, (2) class contribution, (3) work ethic.

The problem with this is class contribution and work ethic are basically up to the teacher to decide, you can do all your work and not get a 100% for work ethic, and you can raise your hand to every question the teacher asks and not get 100% in class contribution.

VAPA requirement (Well actually that’s for the UC’s)

Hmm. I guess the political science and economics requirement.

We have a class where we learn how to study and take notes. And IT’S MANDATORY. I’LL STUDY HOW I WANT, THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

The guidance counselor told me there’s a board policy against graduating early. I don’t mind this because Ohio has free dual enrollment and I think people should take advantage of that instead of trying to graduate early, but it still strikes me as a silly rule.

I wouldn’t mind taking a good class about how to study and take notes, seeing as how I can never do it right. The problem is they always teach those classes to the lowest common denominator and the methods they suggest are never very efficient.

Our schools REQUIRES a study hall freshman and sophomore year and gym all 4 years

@tigerman333 - Gym for four years?
I would actually die.

-Four years of gym,
- No APs for Freshman or Sophomores

No APs for sophomores too? Gosh that seems harsh!
(Technically, we’re not supposed to allow freshman to take APs. My string-pulling got me into AP MacroEcon though… :D)

I almost forgot the best one. AP US History can only be taken by sophomores.

At our school, AP US History must be taken in a 2 hour block with Honors English II, which essentially means the same thing for us too…

-We have to take economics/personal finance (that’s a Virginia thing)
-All history and English APs have to be taken a certain grade (e.g., APUSH, junior year)
-2 years of PE/health

Religion for four years. Perks of being at a Catholic school.
Basically everything else that revolves around the religious aspect of my school, especially community service. I like the service itself, but then my school makes us do a bunch of busy work and write reflections about how we’re “living our lives in Christ” …

But my personal favorite was one time in the daily morning prayer (over the PA) when we were told to “toss away logic and trust in God.” [-(

On the bright side, we do get random days off a few times a year b/c of archdiocese holidays

-4 years of gym required
-No AP classes freshman or sophomore year (we only have 14 AP)

My school had four until this year.
