Burn the Conservatives?

I recently visited Brown’s campus, took the tour, info session, browsed around in Providence. Simply put, I loved it (although I’m a bit nervous about the whole open curriculum thing.) Overall, its reputation is flawless, but for one thing.

I’ve heard that Brown is very, very left. Like, flaming, ultra-liberal. I realize the hippie days are over, but I’ve also heard it’s an unfriendly atmosphere to conservatives or even right-leaning moderates like myself who might disagree with a good amount of left-wing policies. I’ve heard there’s a real chance of alienation. Current students: How true would you say this is?

Take a look at this thread: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/brown-university/726930-how-liberal-brown.html?highlight=conservative

It does go a little bit OT, but it answers your question nonetheless.

As a moderate student, I feel that sometimes Brown can be a bit too liberal (changing Columbus Day to “fall weekend” for example), but at the end of the day MOST people are willing to engage in conversation and not just attack and alienate you for your beliefs. Don’t be afraid to be yourself  There’s probably more people that sympathize with you than you might think.

I’m also rather moderate, and I agree with BrownBelle’s assessment completely.

Most people like that use their ideology to fill an inner void, thats why its so strong

I’m not too concerned about alienation, but what about my chance at getting in? If they see that I am obviously conservative (in a young republicans club), is Brown so liberal that this will hurt my chances?

^Are you joking? To answer you question, no.

You’d be like an underrepresented minority.
