So, I’ll be attending UofM come the fall and if all things go to plan and I’ll be staying in Bursley Hall. How big are the rooms? I understand that there are singles and doubles (hopefully, I’ll get a single) - are they super cramped? And this community bathroom… How many people do you share the bathroom with? I’m (unfortunately) very finicky about bathrooms and nudity and whatnot, so this is worrying me a great deal. Do they keep the bathrooms clean? Are the bathrooms gender exclusive (please say yes)? Thanks in advance!
Are you freshmen or transfer? The housing assignment for freshmen is not out yet. For returned students, they have pick the rooms already. Single rooms are ~$2000 more and should not be very popular. The room size at Bursley is typical.
I am (or will be) a freshman. I’m willing to pay that extra fee for a single. I have to stay in Bursley freshmen year for a program I’m participating in. I’m just curious of my future living conditions (and trying plan my shower schedule - seriously, what are those community bathrooms like? .-. I’ve never been in one).
It would be like those in a swimming pool or a gym.
Go to YouTube and search for Bursley Hall Blues - very informative!!
@MissBlackrose. Swimming pool locker room is pretty accurate description. One thing to keep in mind is that all the other girls will be focused on themselves so try not to feel to self conscious. Also see if you can order a Velcro towel wrap. They are a great way to cover up in a communal bathroom
If I had to guess the typical size of double rooms at Bursley are somewhere are 12x15 (I could be totally wrong). Every double room I’ve ever seen at Bursley has been quite roomy. As for community bathrooms, the vast majority on campus are gender exclusive (and the ones that are not are mainly for people who identify as trans, non-gender conforming, etc.), and the amount of people you share with depends on whether or not you live on a girls only or co-ed hall. I’d say the normal amount of people you share with is around…10-15, maybe upwards to 20, but you’d be surprised how often you’ll be the only one showering. People are on all sorts of different schedules at U of M, and I can only count on one hand the number of times I’ve ever had to wait for a shower, and I can’t remember ever having to wait to use a stall or a sink.
As for cleanliness, there are janitors who come in and clean the bathrooms every day. They’re cleaner than a bathroom you’d find at most student-occuppied off-campus apartments, I can guarantee that much. I also second the suggestion to have a velcro-towel–I got one at Target–and of course bring flip flops!
@jen101 Are the singles pretty spacious (ya know, in terms of being a single)?
And is the bathroom down the hall?
I have no idea about singles in Bursley, sorry! I lived in East Quad last year and the singles were TINY, like 10x11, max. And yep, the bathroom is down the hall. Usually no farther than 6 or so doors away, depending on your room location.
Even in the same dorm, room size and shape may vary. A typical single room is around 8x12 and a double room is 12x15. Some rooms are slightly larger though.
I think the dorm hall bathroom is part of the college experience and is usually fun! It’s dormitory living.
