So, I'm an incoming 2013 freshmen and I was assigned a single in South Quad (how did that happen?). Anyways, I'm looking to switch out into a double so I have a better chance to meet new people and live the college experience (or whatever). My two choices are a double in South Quad, or a double in Bursley.

I'm actually seriously considering switching up to North Campus in Bursley. Am I crazy for thinking this? Quite honestly, the bus rides don't scare me too much. I just feel there would be a tighter sense of community among the freshmen up in Bursley, since it's so isolated from everything. In terms of dorm food/room size, I would think South Quad and Bursley are comparable. So which one should I take?

I like South Quad for its convenient location (close to classes, shops, restaurants, etc). I'm LSA so pretty much all my classes are on Central.
I like that Bursley is more quiet and has more freshmen. Like I said, I don't mind too much taking the bus if I need to. Plus, the last time I visited, I liked the appearance of North Campus more than Central.

Is North Campus really as bad as everyone says it is? And is South Quad really as good as everyone says it is?

I stayed in South Quad for orientation and thought it was wonderful. I don’t think North Campus is that bad, but I would MUCH prefer South Quad over anything on North. You say you don’t mind the commute now, wait til it’s 10 or more below and snowing. :P

Stay in South Quad. Trust me, you will not regret it. During those cold winter nights when you’re waiting for the bus, it won’t be nice.

There is no such thing as a “tighter sense of community” up at North. You can find people to hang out with in South Quad, or in any other dorm on Central/Hill.

If you want to swap into a double, I’m sure you could make that happen without having to do North Campus. Check the room swap board and I’m sure you’ll be able to find someone who’d rather have a single in south over a double in MoJo/couzens/markley/west/south.

Well, in terms of dorm preference, I would only prefer either South, Bursley, and maybe MoJo/markley, but I checked and I couldn’t find any one going to swap from their MoJo or Markley room. I’m pretty sure I want either South or Bursley, it’s just a matter of choosing which one. Anyone living up in Bursley willing to give some input?

clueless, how big is your southquad single?

My daughter was a freshman in Bursely last year. She dreaded the whole idea and was miserable when she got her room assignment. Long story short, she had the time of her life. The students all really bond and she made friends for life. The bus rides were a pain, but not half as bad as she expected. The dorm is huge so there’s lots of opportunity to meet people and everyone was super-friendly. Interestingly, even though there are 1400 or so students in Bursely, it feels fairly intimate. I say go for it.

I lived on North Campus for two years (various reasons, not going to get into them right now). The bus rides suck a lot. Seriously. Live in squad–the location is awesome, the cafeteria is pretty good, and dorm-wise, it’s just like Bursley. Don’t change.

Hi OP,

There are going to be freshmen in whatever room you decide to stay in, and since we’re all new here, we’ll all be looking for more friends. I mean, if worst comes to worst you can even say hi to me, because I’m staying in South Quad as well! And I’m going to have to agree with everyone here: stay in South Quad, since if you’re familiar with Michigan weather, something that seems bearable in the summer will not continue to be so during the winter.
