ballaholioc23,
yea a-100 is not difficult. if the students can go into a-100 thinking its the hardest class, i would think most would spend more time on a-100.
hype up the course and say it’s hard/impossible so they study harder, that’s what i was trying to do.

All,

Would it be fair to say that a student should probably not major in accounting if he/she is struggling with A100 (i.e. <B+)? Thanks

ace550,

depends. ask your S/D if they really put in their best effort for A-100. if your S/D thinks they put in their best effort and still didn’t do to well then I think you know the answer

a-100 is the foundation for upper level courses. all the accounting courses relate with each other and will only get harder. however, if s/d found a strong passion for accounting and know they can do well then i would major in it.

Depends on how low the grade was. A “B” isnt bad at all, especially if it was the first try and they had never been exposed to the material before. If it was B- or lower, and especially on the second try, then perhaps there should be concern. But don’t be too hard on a kid or think that just because of a “B” in the class, they aren’t fit for the major and will do poorly.

Smile and College,

Thanks for the advice. My son will be a DA next year. I have already told him to treat A100 as a 4-credit class. Hope he will remember that.

I got a B in A100, then went on to get an A in A201, A202, A311, A312, an A- in A329, and an A+ in A325. My accounting GPA is a 3.91.

So from personal experience, whatever grade you get in A100 is not reflective of how you would do in other accounting courses.

maxellis,

There are always outliers. I have looked into the grade distribution report and noticed that 40% of the students passing the course got a grade of B+ or above. I have read your posts and have high regard for your ability. However, I am not sure if I can ignore the indicator for average students. Thus, I would be interested in your insight why A100 may not be a good indicator for the higher level accounting courses. Are there other reasons in addition to the following?

1) The student does not know that it should be treated as a 3-credit hour course.
2) The course is taken in the 1st semester. It is a new environment.
3) The course is not very useful. IU really should downgrade the requirement of A100 from B to B- for Kelley admission purposes.

Also, if A100 is not a good indicator, which course(s) would be a more reliable indicator for a student to pursue accounting as a major?

Thanks

I would say A100 is not a good indicator for two reasons. The first is that it is a 1 cr. 8 week course that gives an overview of all accounting. It just does not go into enough depth for someone to know whether or not they have a knack for accounting. You cannot pick up the fundamentals that quickly, and from my expierences once you get the fundamentals the rest will come a lot easier (it did for me).

The second is that while managerial/cost accounting was primarily multiple choice, financial and tax were usually longer answer problems (with some m.c. thrown in). A100 is all m.c. Some people are really good at multiple choice, and others are good at long answer. It isn’t representative of other accounting classes.

Taking into account the fact I completed A201 and A202 over the summer at a CC, I would say A201 and A202 were a lot more representative of the 300 level accounting courses at IU.

maxellis,

Thanks for the advice. Our local IU campus only allows students with sophomore status (credit hours > 21) to take A201. So, it looks like my son may have to look into IVY Tech.

Ace, IUB Kelley won’t accept Ivy Tech’s financial accounting class for A201 credit. They accept a lot of out of state cc’s, but not Ivy Tech.

bthomp1,

Thanks. That is what I concluded after my initial inquiry.

By the way, I found the link to IUPUI’s A100 from one of your old posts. It still works. Will ask my son to review it. For those who may be interested in, check out post #47 in the following link:

I’m officially behind.

I’m just STARTING to KIND OF understand the Balance Sheets we’ve been doing the last few days, but I’m completely blowing off some of the readings; which is irresponsibe, I know. I keep looking at the Balance Sheets that we did in class, but some of the calculations and placements on it seem random and I cant figure out why what goes where. I understand everything 10x better when Winston is going through it with us but when I’m on my own I basically stare at it blankly.

Since my confidence is about a 1.5 on a 10 scale right now, would it be wise to withdraw now or start working harder and atleast stick it through until after the midterm?

I would stick with it, but you’re going to have to start putting the effort in. Read the readings and not just to get them out of the way. Read them, and make sure you understand them. They DO help with the material. Start going to office hours now, before the mad rush before midterms begins. The biggest thing is not to get even further behind, or you’ll find it nearly impossible to catch up. That said, it really isn’t that difficult of a class if you put the time in.

Speaking of prerequisites for Kelley, M118 is quite possibly the most annoying math class I’ve ever taken. I’m not even trying to get into Kelley but now I can see how they use this as a weed-out class. It’s freaking obnoxious.

If you are a direct admit already and don’t need M118 to get into Kelley, it isn’t a bad idea just to take finite at a cc in the summer. Not worth messing up your gpa and stressing over the quirky content.

M118 is easy so far, but I see what you’re getting at with “obnoxious.” if I’ve learned one thing in the class so far, i learned from the Venn Diagrams that I cannot draw circles for ****. Otherwise it’s just rather pointless.

Taking the midterm tonight from 9-11 and feeling pretty confident!

Nice! Good luck. And I’ve learned that in finite is well, and I think I did really well on the test today. What’d you think of it/good on that to if its tomorrow. I found mine to be pretty easy.

I have the M118 test tomorrow and I’m absolutely terrified!! Studying my ass off right now, hahahahaha.

I have a feeling the A100 exam was a Success. =]

Good luck with the Finite test; I took it yesterday and there was a lot of stuff on it that we never learned.
