I am applying to Wharton and until now the only things that are business related on my application are the facts that I have started a business and that I received a commendation for excellence in Economics. Other than that, everything else consists of mathematics awards.

But now I am taking part in the a national virtual stock exchange competition and the prizes go to:

top 5 from each school
top 3 individuals overall

I am barely in the running for the top 3 individuals overall (might make it, might not) but I will definitely get into the top 5 from each school. So I was wondering, what effect this will have on my application to very selective business schools?

Would just having the top 5 from school suffice or would getting the top 3 overall award really boost my application?

If you want to see it in context, here is, basically, my profile: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/924668-chance-me-ivies-will-chance-back-d.html

Thanks a lot guys, really appreciate it!

It can’t hurt your app but I doubt anyone here can accurate give you an answer as to if it is a boost and by how much unless they were an admissions officer or had previously worked in admissions for a school.

Top 5 school level? Not a Wharton level accomplishment. Top in country? Depends how big the competition is and the country.

Well not top 5 school level. It is a national competition (so to speak) and I will come top in my school FOR SURE and there is a good chance I will come in the top 3 (if lucky then first) but then again there is a chance that I may not come in the top 3 at all. So if I do not come in the top 3 how will it work out (I am from Hong Kong which is a relatively small place I guess - national or regional competiton?)?

What would you define as a Wharton level accomplishment?

LOL i know what competition ur talking about. its not a very impressive achievement… i go to school in hong kong too. sure it looks good but what u need is starting ur own company and making a profit of at least 50,000-100,000 hk dollars.

if u cant manage that then secure an intern is a big company like morgan stanley. these are wharton level achievments.
