It is interesting that UMBC does not have a business school or offer traditional business majors (accounting, finance, or marketing). However, it does offer "certificates" in accounting and finance, which appear to cover as much in these subjects as found in a traditional business school. The student still has to have a major in something else, such as economics (or financial economics). My recollection is that when UMBC was created in the 1960s, the State or the university system would not let it have a business school because of potential competition with the University of Maryland College Park or Towson University. Can anyone comment on how popular the certificate programs are? Also, do UMBC students transfer to College Park or other schools in order to complete a business major?
