What are the main differences and job opportunities and also which colleges specialize with which? Thank you
‘Business Econ’ would be programs of econ with more emphasis on skills in accounting, finance, or management. These programs don’t usually put a lot of emphasis on econ as an academic course, but mainly as it applies to business. I’m not completely sure, but I believe Babson and Wharton would fit well under this category. Obviously, this type of program usually provides a strong foundation for entrepreneurship, finance, or consulting.
Math Econ is for those who want to do graduate work in econ or just like to have the quantitative parts explained. Most top schools have quantitative courses, even if the major is not mathematical economics. However, Colgate and Yale have Mathematical Economics programs. Swarthmore is well-known for producing high numbers of Econ PhDs. Math Econ graduates usually go through graduate school and generally do a lot of thinking (professor, researcher).
For other econ programs, look through the course catalog to decide what type of program they are.
Well you are certainly not going to be at a disadvantage for a business career by picking up the quantitative courses. In addition to Finance jobs, you’ll have Wall St quant. Opportunities if you do well at a strong school. The math heavy Econ majors have all the same opportunities as those with a BA in Econ and then some, including grad work in Econ.
