hey everyone I am having a problem choosing a major I am 2 years in and debating what I should do here is my problem is after I graduated high school I went to get a two year degree in construction management from the local community college but I also did all my GE classes so took 2 and a half years so I can transfer into the university. basically I work for a company but find that the office is ran by engineers. I don't want to do engineering because I basically don't want to be stuck as an engineer what if things go south like in 2008 when construction was slow. My problem is that I love to work with money, numbers and want to get into a position where I number crunch, manage people and projects while dealing with clients I like meeting new people. just wondering what is all out there in business finance, what can I expect for the job market and schooling as I would only have 2 years left to complete the finance program. also what is everyone's take on it, or experience in the financial field. What do you do now with your degree. I have always wanted to study business and think this is the path I want to take as I feel I will excel In just about anything I do. any advice would helps.

thanks in advance for the help

Finance is a solid major, but the job market is tight. There are more and more people graduating every year with finance/economics degrees and there aren’t enough new jobs to match the number of new graduates. Try to pair with something else as a safety net like accounting, math or computer science/information systems.

If you want to crunch numbers, I would suggest accounting as a major. It’s all about keeping track of money and you can get jobs that finance majors get as well as accounting jobs.

Yeah I am just getting nervous I just want to make the right decision. I’m not to sure if I would like accounting I don’t think I could stand being stuck at a desk all day and not being social. Maybe a finiance degree with a minor in accounting.? I want to get into a project managment or position where I can be in charge of making a company money and handling money issues and employees. Are these typical jobs people with a finiance degree can do.?

What you are describing could be done by either accounting or finance professionals. Seems like a double major in accounting/finance is the best for what you’re looking for.

Okay sounds good. Not sure if I would like accounting to much. But who knows my thing is when I browse threw job posting I see way more companies looking to finance degree vs engeenering jobs out there at least in my state. What Are starting average Salaries for finance grads? Just want to know what to expect when I’m done. Thanks for all the info.

It depends. Usually the starting salary for finance/accounting is somewhat low but increase dramatically once you have 2-3 years of quality experience under your belt. In NYC the range is around $48,000-60,000 (without the bonus) depending on the industry. Those with 3 or more experience and/or an advanced degree can expect to be in the $75,000-250,000 range (with bonuses). Not sure about other states though.
