Business Internships for High Schoolers

Hello! Right now I’m a rising sophomore in high school, and I’ve just completed an internship with a political party. Since I did this I now want to focus on my next passion next summer, finance/business.

My Question:

Since I’ve already finished a political internship I was wondering where I could find a financial or business one available for high schoolers? I’m looking all over but it just doesn’t seem to be a big market. If I can’t do an internship what other good things could I do to make myself more attractive to top colleges next summer? Also, would a political internship make me look any more attractive to a college for an undergrad finance program?

Hi! I recently got an internship of my own (also political, funnily enough), but it is my first one so don’t consider me completely qualified and trustworthy for this answer. I would suggest you don’t limit yourself to official opportunities, I know from experience that very few options are available to high schoolers. If there’s a local business that intrigues you, especially if it’s locally owned, try to get in touch with the owner, manager, or anyone with some authority in the company. I’m sure plenty of businesses would appreciate the free help, and you might get something more engaging than an errand boy/girl. If that doesn’t appeal to you, just remember that passion shines through in your applications, especially to top colleges. If you can get a start on eventually having a leadership position in a club or other activity, or if you can create an activity/opportunity for yourself and others, that will most likely increase your appeal. When in doubt, look for passion (but focus on your studies still). I can’t answer as far as how or if a political internship can increase your appeal for a finance program, but I think it depends on what you did in that internship. If you were involved in treasury or finances of any kind, or maybe even data entry, that might still increase your appeal. If you were going door to door however, that won’t highlight your interest in finance much. This is just my view/opinion, but it adds a perspective at least. Sorry my answer was so long but I hope it helped a bit!
