Alright so I want to major in accounting; however, the school I want to go to (UNC) does not have that major. Would it be better to go to a less prestigious school such as Appalachian State and major in accounting? Or would it be better to go to UNC and major in something else like finance and maybe get a MACC later on at UNC because they have one of the best master of accounting programs in the nation?

Are you dead set on staying in that area? If you really want to do accounting, look at UT and Illinois. Both are expensive, but they are top-notch accounting programs. If you can get into UNC you should be able to get into those schools, although McCombs(UT’s Business school) is more selective than the rest of the university.

Yeah i would love to go to UT epecially since i grew up being a big fan but it costs so much money. I would rather stay in state for financial reasons if possible

Double check at UNC before you plan to do a MACC there. I’ve heard from numerous sources that if you do your undergrad in business at UNC, then you are restricted from doing the MACC there, or something along those lines. A few accounting firm recruiters have told me the same thing. Its stupid, I know, but I guess they just want to diversify there MACC program in terms of undergrad major.

hmm… according to college prowlar UNC does in fact have an accounting major! but on their website or collegeboard it doesnt metion them having accouting as a major. can anyone verify the info given on college prowlar?

I would contact someone from the university about that to be 100% sure.

The speculation about UNC Chapel Hill ugrads not being allowed in the UNC MAC program sounds like an urban legend.

Sorry, it actually says that if you have more than 12 credit hours in accounting, then you are not eligible to apply. So undergrad accounting majors aren’t allowed to apply.

yeah i saw that. however, i heard that you can major in business admin w/ a specialization in accounting at UNC. would it be better to do that or major in accounting somewhere?

I see two things here

(1) You want to go to UNC-CH

(2) You want to major in accounting

These two things aren’t going to happen together. UNC-CH is a fantastic school, one of the best public schools in the country. Accounting is a degree that you don’t need a top school for, as long as it’s accredited and the big 4 do SOME recruiting, you’ll be fine.

Don’t waste your time at UNC-CH getting an accounting degree. I think you’d be wasting time and money. Decide which thing you want more and go from there.

I don’t know how the accounting firms are about recruiting there for undergrads. That would be the thing to find out if I were you. There are cheaper options in state that have an actual accounting major and are recruited as well. How much recruiting is the question.
