hi first time posting.. i am a freshman this fall at penn state and i was wondering about majoring in business, minor in biology and applying to med school. Both fields truely interest me. Say i take all the required pre-med classes and do well in them like 3.8 science gpa, do decent on mcats and then apply to med school. Does the fact that i am majoring in business hurt my chance of getting into med school? I would love to go to med school and have thought about it for a long time. I have been signed up to major in biology but i feel that if i dont make the cut into med school then the major is a waste and it will be hard to get a good job (working in a lab for low pay doesnt exactly interest me). thanks in advance for all the helpful advice....

Hi Joe. Business would actually be a good background for a physician in private practice. The prevailing wisdom is that med schools don't care what you major in as long as you do well in the core pre-req classes. You would need to volunteer in the medical field and get some patient contact and show INTEREST in the field though. There are zillions of biology majors applying to med school, not so many business majors. Also, you might be able to combine those interests as many hospitals and other large organizations have a physician (often with a master's in public health administration as well) at the top. You could always get that master's degree before applying to med school.
