business minor instead of mba?

Is it common for people who go to a top 20 school (not Harvard, but still very well-respected) and major in econ to have to go to business school to get an MBA if they want to going into trading or consulting or hedge fund work (but not ibanking), or could I minor in business (6 basic business classes) along with my econ major so that I wouldn't have to get an MBA later on in life (I have no problem with business school, I'd just rather not spend another 2 years of my life in school if possible)?

A minor won't take the place of an MBA. It possible that if you can and a HF or consulting job out of college that you want to keep, you can get by without going back for an MBA. If you're at a good school with a strong econ major that's recruited by these guys and have a high GPA, they don't care if you've taken business courses. Most of their target schools don't even offer business courses.

Many do choose to go back for the MBA if they want to change jobs/careers and for the network.

ty

and a follow up question: are all the hedge fund/consulting/trading jobs in NY/Chicago, or are there any anywhere else

Greenwich CT has many HF's. There are a few scattered other places, but NYC is the center. More flexibility with living other places in consulting, but it doesn't really matter as you are never home!
