I want to apply for UChicago for preparation into a business major. I’ve researched the UCIB and Trott Business program, but I have a few questions. First, is this a program you apply to as a HS senior or as a first year? Second, is it an application or do you just select it? Finally, do you need to major in Economics in order to gain an advantage for the UCIB program or can I major in something else? Thank you!
UCIB program looks to be for current students at UChicago (you would not apply as a HS student), and it doesn’t seem to have any requirement to be a particular major.
Do you believe UChicago is a good fit for a student wanting to pursue a business career?
Absolutely, I think I heard its around 40% (for better of worse) go into the business/finance world after graduation.
Thank you so much
You apply at the end of your first year for Trott and it is a wholistic review of your application, not solely gpa. My son discussed this today with his advisor.
The student takes classes at Booth as well as having an MBA student mentor and focus with career placement among many other benefits. Believe it’s close too 100% placed upon graduation. Link below outlines benefits.

Do you think applying for a specific major will increase chances?
You’re admitted to the college without applying to a major so that is the first step, however I imagine that many of those pursuing UCIB are Econ majors.
Jim Nondorf (dean of admissions) mentioned last spring that they are preparing to offer a business economics major in the fall of 2018, right about the time that class of 2021 is ready to declare a major. This is very good news for a couple of reasons: 1) after checking with folks in the econ. dept. it appears they are not offering this major. Therefore, it’s likely offered through Booth. Haven’t confirmed that, of course, but it’s a logical supposition (there are only two departments of economics at UChicago - the one in the social sciences div. and the one in Booth). 2) This major will take pressure off the regular Econ. major which is seeing major numbers of up to 20% of the student body. It’s a popular major so having yet another option is a great idea (esp. if offered through the bus. school).
OP, a liberal arts education is excellent preparation for graduate work in business and many of those kids major in economics while in college, though it’s not necessary. We’ve known some students who took advantage of the careers in business program with excellent results. You kind of get the best of both worlds there - the rich education in the liberal arts, which will make you a better thinker and writer and expose you to a variety of subjects, AND some practical exposure to the business school. And now with the introduction of business economics, there might actually be a business -oriented major.
Good luck to you!
